Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

since the NEW BYC stuff, I haven't been as drawn to this site. I only have a handful of subscriptions and my two favorites are Stella's Social Club & Washingtonians (new one). Too many threads getting closed because someone decides to start trouble. I don't think they care about chickens at all or people just want to bully and the internet makes it so easy. After all this time still way too many problems with the new BYC that don't get fixed.

I love Fudge and I love your dog. Your pink mask gave me the courage to 'come out,' as a part time conehead- it makes people smile. Please don't let troublemakers drive you away - then they WIN.
I cannot believe you actually are using that fine cone head portrait of yourself as your avatar...crazy woman !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am recouping from a wonderful allergic reaction to Zyrtek.
Throat closed up, went days & nights drooling & unable to swallow or eat, had to get myself off Zyrtek & ON Diphenhydramine fast (which took the swelling down within 20 minutes) Doc said he has never seen anyone allergic to Zyrtek...well, what can I say ?
I AM JUST SPECIAL !!!
Scared the daylights outta me.
Anyways, now I have a one year supply of Zyrtek (from Costco) that I have not opened & cannot use.
Free to good home.

Chickie Lady -you're grousing about double digit temps, it was 1.2 degrees when I woke up, and because it is sunny it was jumped to 9 degrees 4 hours later. Now I DO need to wear gloves and finding my face mask would be a good idea too.

Chickie Lady, I loooove Zyrtec so if you can't find anyone else who wants it, I'd be happy to take it if we ever meet up. I am not in need of any though, so I'm sure there is a better home for it--just don't toss it.

Whew! Busy week and I finally get a chance to sit down for a while and check in. How's everyone!? We've had quite a busy week and this week is no different. Tuesday night we stayed overnight at the Salish lodge and MIL watched the kids. Then I got a broody and read every last book on my shelf that had even the tiniest section on having a broody hen, and finally decided to order chickies for her instead of eggs.

This morning my hair dresser was able to squeeze me in for an emergency appointment since I'm going to LA for a single night with DH on Thursday. Last night I borrowed a little bitty dress from my sister and I'm trying on more of them at a friends' house tonight, to choose just the right one for our night away. We'll fly down, have drinks and dinner at a restaurant the company rented out, free night at nice hotel, brunch with a friend, then we'll fly home Friday. What a whirlwind trip but I'm so excited! I'll try to get some pics in all the excitement and post them when we get home.

I'm SO worried about my chickens while we're gone though. We don't have a heated waterer and unless I leave the run door open the whole time we're gone and give them free rein of the yard and creek (also leaving them completely vulnerable to a predator overnight), then they won't have liquid water the entire 2nd day we're gone. That's NOT OK. Don't know what to do but I really think I'm gonna have to leave the run open for them all.

yes, we have tried leaving the light on in the coop all night. She still isnt going in. Yesterday when we went out to feed, one of the bigger ones literally trampled over her in her rush to get the food. The chicken just lay on her side, and didn't get up until I kind of helped her back on her feet. She doesn't like being touched though so she got away quickly. The others were pecking at her while she tried to eat, then she would stop eating and move away. I ended up standing guard over her while she ate the scratch so that the others would leave her alone.

Another question~ as we got home from an appointment last night, I saw a rat scurrying out of the run area (not the coop itself) how do you all keep the rats out? We live on 12 acres, and there are 5 acres beind the coop that are field and woods. No idea how many rats may be "in the wild" out there.
