Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

yes, we have tried leaving the light on in the coop all night. She still isnt going in. Yesterday when we went out to feed, one of the bigger ones literally trampled over her in her rush to get the food. The chicken just lay on her side, and didn't get up until I kind of helped her back on her feet. She doesn't like being touched though so she got away quickly. The others were pecking at her while she tried to eat, then she would stop eating and move away. I ended up standing guard over her while she ate the scratch so that the others would leave her alone.

Another question~ as we got home from an appointment last night, I saw a rat scurrying out of the run area (not the coop itself) how do you all keep the rats out? We live on 12 acres, and there are 5 acres beind the coop that are field and woods. No idea how many rats may be "in the wild" out there.
Can you put more than one feeder and waterer out for awhile so there are multiple places for her to get at them? I do that any time I introduce new ones to the flock or if I have noticed one getting picked on for some reason.

Whew! Busy week and I finally get a chance to sit down for a while and check in. How's everyone!? We've had quite a busy week and this week is no different. Tuesday night we stayed overnight at the Salish lodge and MIL watched the kids. Then I got a broody and read every last book on my shelf that had even the tiniest section on having a broody hen, and finally decided to order chickies for her instead of eggs.

This morning my hair dresser was able to squeeze me in for an emergency appointment since I'm going to LA for a single night with DH on Thursday. Last night I borrowed a little bitty dress from my sister and I'm trying on more of them at a friends' house tonight, to choose just the right one for our night away. We'll fly down, have drinks and dinner at a restaurant the company rented out, free night at nice hotel, brunch with a friend, then we'll fly home Friday. What a whirlwind trip but I'm so excited! I'll try to get some pics in all the excitement and post them when we get home.

I'm SO worried about my chickens while we're gone though. We don't have a heated waterer and unless I leave the run door open the whole time we're gone and give them free rein of the yard and creek (also leaving them completely vulnerable to a predator overnight), then they won't have liquid water the entire 2nd day we're gone. That's NOT OK. Don't know what to do but I really think I'm gonna have to leave the run open for them all.
I have an extra three gallon heated waterer if ya want to borrow it , I know Woodinville is a long way from Pacific. if ya want to come up this way I''ll buy you and DH coffee at Starbucks.

You can use your brooder lamp and put a 75w bulb in it and hang/hook it just above the waterer. That is what I did for one of my waterers while we are here in Hawaii. But like Imp said, it is supposed to warm up tomorrow.

Is anyone between Seattle and Portland interested in one of my white silkie boys? I will be driving to Wilsonville for a reptile show, and I will be delivering one of them while I'm down there. I can meet in Wilsonville or along the I-5 corridor. I would prefer that they go to a home to be bred or shown. If you are just interested in eating them, I can do that myself, lol. Free to good home.

And if anyone has a pretty silkie pullet for sale in the same area, I'd love to see pics. I might be able to stop on the way north. I'm not picky on color (just health), although I already have a dark blue girl from Marjorie Best. I wish I knew if she had any more for sale....

Fighting off the crud DH gave me for about a week. Usually, it is me giving it to him! At least I'm able to relieve my sinuses occasionally now. Hope everyone is well out there!!
My EEs are finally starting to lay again. There are a couple young ladies that haven't started yet. I didn't realize they might hold out until spring even though they are of age. If things work out how I'd like them to, this spring I'm gonna get winter layers. Speckled Sussex, Faverolles, Australorps and Wyandottes are on the list.
