Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

Well, since I am just starting my trek in the 40's I am looking forward to my youngest leaving the nest in the next couple of years. I of course will not have an "empty nest" since the chickens are filling those quite well. And of course, there is the possibility of adoption/foster care down the road.

That's cool. I've thought about that every now and again, but I realize that by the time I'd be ready to foster or adopt, I'd be pretty darn old. As it is I'm an "old" parent - most people who have kids my children's age are in their 20s or 30s. It's so strange. Sometimes I feel out of place. My friends who are my age have adult children.

We fostered my DW's cousins kids for 6 months several years ago. It was a good experience until the oldest started to say false things about our youngest to his counselor. So we had to have them moved to another home until they went back to the parents. But we have talked about doing it again in the future after our kids are out. And we have one child out of the house already, our youngest is a Junior in HS. You are like my DW's twin sister, her kids are 6 and 4.

Yesterday the ROBINS arrived in force. Right on time. The 1st week of Feb. whooot, whooot.
The trees have buds popping out and new growth is starting on many plants. Spring is very, very close folks!

I have had Robins for a few weeks now. My cat keeps bringing them around for us.

Ditto but no cat. And we've had humming birds all winter. If you feed them they will come!

Weird though.... not a single crocus blooming yet. I'm sure looking forward to spring. I'm getting anxious to start planting spinach seeds.

Just found out we're having company for the weekend so I decided to bake sourdough, no knead bread. I got an Italian starter from Total Colour last month so I'm trying it out. I'm doing 2 batches, one with my regular starter and one with the Italian. We'll do a taste test and see if anyone can tell the difference. I love doing taste tests, and I'm really hoping we can tell a difference between the two.

Just getting the rock home is half the work. Then you have to move them over and over again to puzzle them together. I felt like I was in a Survivor challenge LOL.

If your chickens free range, be prepared for them to scratch dirt on top of the stones. My front walk looks great, but the one on the side of the house (past the gate at the end of this walk) is constantly buried under dirt and mulch.

I forgot to mention... You did a really great job on this pathway. Getting a straight line on one side is no small job! Way to go!

I try to plant a fine leafed ground cover around stepping stones. I like red thyme best. Sometimes we use wooly thyme, but it needs a little more tending, meaning cutting it away from the stones when it decides to grow over the top. Either way it helps keep the weeds down. But never, never, never let anyone talk you into using any kind of moss!! It should be banned as a noxious weed!

Hey everyone!
I have been lurking, but most of the time out and about reading posts on my phone. And it's so hard to post from my phone, so I don't say anything.

to all the new peeps!

I miss having enough time to sit in front of my computer and read and converse with all my BYC peeps.

Just wanted to let anyone that might be interested in a couple of silkies, I have two 7wk olds nice pet quality blues, one light blue and one dark. They just don't have the foot feathering I need for show or breeding. And two 1 week olds, 1 splash and one blue, that have toe issues. One has too many and one is missing the 5th toe on one foot. They both have great foot feathering, so you will never know unless you go looking. But I can't show or breed these. They need to go in pairs since the age difference is so great and I don't sell singles. $10 per pair.

If anyone is interested I am going to put them on Craigs list next week, but wanted to post here first. They should look like really good quality silkies when they grow up. Straight run, I can't determine sex at this point.

PM me if interested.

Hope everyone has a great weekend. DH and I are celebrating V-day this weekend instead of Thursday or next weekend to avoid the crowds.

Oh yeah, I let Little Red(Production RIR) out of solitary today. After 5 days alone, she has a new attitude. She has not chased the teens at all today. Will be curious to see how things are in the morning when they are closed in the run.

yesterday and todays production is up to 9 eggs with just 8 birds. Spring is about to be sprung!

(2 day total)
