Good idea!
you need a dog that has been raised with chickens from time it was a puppy that can be out with them and keep the hawks away.

Yeah dogs take a lot of time, and cost a lot in food and supplies.I wish I had a dog, but I don't have time right now to train a dog![]()
What breed? there are some breeds that are better then others for having around chickens. The breed mix's i have i would never suggest others use for it. Mine have been taught to respect the chickens. I feed my dogs raw meat and when eating outside if a chicken takes their food they run to me to whine about it because they aren't allowed to do anything about it.My dog was raised around chickens Ya know what he'd say to the hawk? Glad you could join me for LUNCH! Chicken appetizer and HAWK as the main course! Lol
Tucker loves birds! (2eat)

Thanks. I taught my dogs to protect the chickens so when free ranging if i have to get something to drink, or go potty i don't have to stress about hawks or neighbor cats.
If I only have one dog outside, they watch better. If both are out, they would prefer to play, unless something land based enters the property. Then they are after it.
