Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

*sigh* A friend of mine (in ohio) had a dog show up at her church, a stray that is pregnant. She asked me if I could help her out with money for it's food becuase the shelter said they would have it put to sleep right away so it couldn't give birth. Anyone have ideas of how to raise money to buy her some kibble online and have it shipped to her? I only need to raise $18 to get her a bag of ol roy. I mean it's a foster, and something to eat is better then nothing.
Any ideas at all?
she needs to go on Facebook and find rescues in her area.

I need BYC help with these poultry nipples. I know there has been many conversations about them in the past, so I hope I am not being too repetitive, but what-in-the-heck-one am I supposed to buy???!!! Haha, I keep looking them up and I have two glass bottles (I can drill if I need to) that I really want to use. Do I just order 5 of them and cut a hole in a cap n' stick it in there? I need schematics!
I don't know that you want to risk drilling glass. The waterer must have a hole at the top to allow the water to drip out of the nipple. If you just drill the hole in the cap, you will just create a vacuum and your chicks won't be able to get any water out. BTW... your new chicks are already nipple trained.
Whoever asked about poultry nipples and what to buy: We originally bought the threaded style and they leaked like crazy. They were super duper cheap which is why I tried them first. I finally splurged and got the $3/ea ones from Reber Ranch; they're much higher quality and they are also the push-in style and are simply fantastic. We haven't had a problem with leaking at all.
We have the threaded style that you drill in- and no leaks at all. You have to have the exact drill bit and also need to have a heavy bucket-bottom so the hole stays the size you drill. We bought ours on Amazon. On the push-in style- do those have black rubber grommets on them? I think that's the kind you are suposed ot use for PVC-pipe installation- and that's our next plan- to have a watering station with a 5 gallon (or larger )bucket and nice long run of PVC.
I have the push in ones also in my bucket waterers. There is a website that sells nipple waterers and kits to make them yourself. They suggest the push in ones too. I also made single nipple waterersout of smaller water bottles. Not the "bottled water" bottles, but the reusable ones. I got them at Target or Fred Meyer for cheap. They work great in cages and brooders! My suggestion on getting nipples, is if you are ordering online from like QC Supply and getting other stuff order some nipples too. They are like .99 cents and if you are already paying shipping......:D
We have the YELLOW nipples for our PVC pipe waterers... they have a yellow plastic band that wraps up and half way around the pipe. I did a bunch of research - they were the best ones to use on PVC pipes. They do not leak. They can not wiggle and make the hole larger. I bought them on Amazon. They are distinctly different than the threaded and push-in nipples. We also use the push-in style that Reber Ranch carries. They also do not leak. From what I read in reviews, the threaded will either leak over time, or, if you drill the hole at a slight angle, will leak right away. ETA: And yes, the ones Reber carries have a rubber gasket. And no - not necessarily meant for PVC pipes. The only ones that have to be used on PVC pipe are the yellow ones because of the plastic band that wraps around the pipe.
What is the container with the red cap? I need those! :)

Q: does anyone have a silky or broody hen they want to part with or loan out? I might need a chick-sitter soon.

It is bad Bio-security to loan out a bird

BTW- how much are you all paying for your Chicken Saddles/aprons? Is anyone making their own?
I got mine from http://www.louisescountrycloset.com/ $5 bucks each. Got them in 4 days. I got the snaps and scotchgaurd added

OK I can top that one, try your heal.

Then it worked so well I tore everything in my foot and had to be off it for almost 6 months.. But hay it fixed it..
yeah- I had those in my heel too- they took 4 spurs off my ankle and heel and rebuilt my foot with ligaments they borrowed from various places, lol. Dang- I know that feeling, really well! I know a GREAT foot doctor if anyone needs one......

I don't mean to be an ***, but this sounds like a scam.

ug she just contacted me and the dog is in labor. Stress. I wish I lived close to her so I could go help her with it. She's been trying to contact rescues daily and most of them keep telling her that they are full. It's a sad situation. I'm glad that she took the dog home instead of just leaving it there though. It's funny though the dog knew where to go. Last sunday it showed up at her church and wouldn't leave. They finally used a jump rope to tie it in the back of the church til church was over. Then she took it home.

thanks - I have a gal who might be making them soon, nice to see how much they charge. Snaps seem like a very good thing.

Regarding the Scotchguard- that contains PFOA's/PTFE's- is that safe for birds?
Lots of folks don't know this- just passing on some info.
http://www.peteducation.com/article.cfm?c=15+1829&aid=2874

"....What products may have PTFE? Product brand names containing PTFE include non-stick Teflon, SilverStone, Supra, Calphalon, All-Clad, Circulon, Emerilware, Farberware, Meyer, KitchenAid, Krups, and George Foreman. The stain repellants StainMaster and Scotchgard also contain PTFE....."
