Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

Since I was teasing Travis about photos - here are a some of mine :)

One of last years hatchings.

My badly-behaving-broody-bird-cage. Wire bottom, about 2 1/2' off the ground, each "cell" is about 2'x2'. I refer to this structure as "solitary confinement".

Here is an example of a badly-behaving-broody-bird :) If I want to break a broody, I put her in solitary for two nights. Then I let her back into gen-pop (general population). If she is still broody I repeat the process. It is not often that it takes a 3rd time in "the hole" for her to give up the broody-tude.

Some times, I want a broody to hatch out some eggs. So I built a really small broody-coop. It is about 3' tall in the front and 2 1/2" towards the back, maybe it's shorter than that. I sit it directly on the ground. Neither of these photos show it, but there is a small pop-door on the side you cannot see. The "open" side is covered with hardware cloth. I did that to let the rest of the flock take a peek at mama and chicks. When the chicks were very small, the pop-door opened into a small chick-proof run. After 3 or 4 weeks, I removed that, and let mama take her babies (3) anywhere she wanted. When the chicks were 8 or so weeks old, mama took them into the "big house" to sleep with the rest of her flock. At that time, all three of my coops opened up into the same run. So Mama took the babies into the coop that she was used to sleeping in.

Roof is hinged to allow access to feed and water - and to check on the new family.

I love your solitary confinement structure. I only have one I call it the "Sin-bin", more of a covered wire animal cage. Yours is A- plus !

Almost three years ago, a kid took the curve too fast, drove across the neighbor's driveway, through the fence, through my garden, and hit the porch. Insurance took care of my garden and porch (more or less), but the neighbor never did anything about the replacing the fence panel. I've asked, even offered to pay, but while he's never said no, he's never done anything either. I've planted shrubs that will EVENTUALLY screen that corner, but it's all sand and under a big leaf maple, so things take a long time to grow. I'm trying to figure out something really cheap (free would be even better) to screen that corner. I'm thinking twig fence or something. Any ideas?

How about a willow fence? Just cut long (6feet or more) willow branches and stick them in the ground. They will provide a living fence (but it needs annual trimming) in less than a year. You see them a lot in England.

Just one more wouldn't hurt. Heck, nobody hardly notice. Easy peasy...

Hmm.. they would need a friend their same age, so you'd better get him/her a buddy. So get just two.

Two - well, what if you got both boys. That would not be so good. I'm sure you'd like to guarantee that least one boy and one girl from your pair. If you run the math, you'll find that if you get eight it the odds of all eight being the same sex are astronomical. But with just seven, that's not the case. So get eight.

Eight - well shucks, now that you are going to get eight, you might as well take advantage of the "buy 5 get one free deal", so pay for ten, and you'll have twelve.

Twelve - golly, that's not that many really. Might as well bump that to 16 to make it evenly divisable by eight so pay for fifteen, you'll get three for free for a total of eighteen.

Eighteen - that way if one gets sick you still have two sets of eight.

Two -- wait, if you have two sets of eight, why can't you have three sets? Your friends ask, "How many chickens do you have", and you answer, "Three sets".

Go buy twenty four birds.

Everything will be just fine.

Honest.

Everything will be fine. My mom doesn't have the time/energy to deal with chicks. My extras go to her and her neighbor

Our $8 inCOOLbator is a success!

Both of my EE eggs were pipped this morning then one of them zipped- the window is now all fogged up (I am tempted to open it long enough to swipe with a paper towel, so having to restrain myself :

this guy pipped on the end and not much action yet:

I've got one Silver leghorn egg pipped so far, but none of the Russian Orloffs, Welsummer, or Barnevelders have started. yI'm chuckling because DH is hanging out at the inCOOLbator, talking to the chicks- "C'mon little guy, you can do it!".
How Great! I can't stay away when they get to this stage. I hatched Russian Orloffs once and had to help a bit with each one, the breeder had warned me about this tho. Good Luck! great that it turned out to be a weekend

That 'gator was not photo shopped. It measured 28 feet 1 inch.
The video was from the wildlife div in Fla.

I can't believe none of you responded even with a
