Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

It sure is fun watching my new little chicks. One wants to peck everything including her sisters toe nails and eye! One has to stand in the food bowl to eat. And they scratch the floor just like my hens do! Funny little things.

They're noisy as can be, then they crash for a minute or so and there's absolutely no sound at all. Funny little things!

Well those are pretty darn cute. Does Cowgirlgrace have any left? I'm tempted to give her a call since the woman I'm supposed to be picking up Wheaten/Blue Wheaten hatching eggs from hasn't called me back. We messaged back and forth, gave me her number so I could pick up the eggs and now isn't calling me back. I've got some very determined Silkies waiting for those eggs, but they might be just as happy with chicks?

Okay, I need experts here . . . DH is building the coop with 6x6' size for the enclosed coop and then a 6 x 12 pen -- how many LF can this hold?
I think I have too many (20). They will all be large girls, RIR, BO, SalmFav, SLW, Dominiques, Polish, etc. Thanks.

If you go by the general rule of 10sf per bird in the run, you can have 7.2 birds. For 20 you need at least 200sf in the run.

Coop is 4sf per bird

So yesterday when I gave my silkie blue eggs, she wouldn't take them. Had a consultation with two of the other birds. Still didn't want them. I had to put two silkie eggs with them to get her to sit on them. She was on them all night in the carrier I put out there for her. The silkie rooster kept her company and left the other girls in the care of his son.

Today she picked out the silkie eggs and moved them into the dog house they all sleep in. What a rotten brat! So I took her out and put her back in the carrier and took the silkie eggs all away. She finally settled down on the blue eggs.

The color is the issue I think. If they were with other birds and seeing them all the time, I don't think it would have been an issue.

The large fowl throw any white dummy eggs out of the nests. I don't have any birds that lay white eggs and they don't know what they are. They'll let bright pink, blue, and green plastic easter eggs sit in the nest usually.

Almost done! Just need to weave in ends, put a long ruffle on the bottom and some finishing touches! Love when it all comes together nicely

This turned out so cute! I can see why she loves it, it looks great on her. She's such a cutey patooty!

I get lots of Holly around here. I usually just cut them down if they get annoying. Want me to save some?
Russ

I would love to get a variegated holly that has lots of berries. If you happen to have one of those, maybe I could get a start?

Our $8 inCOOLbator is a success!

Both of my EE eggs were pipped this morning then one of them zipped- the window is now all fogged up (I am tempted to open it long enough to swipe with a paper towel, so having to restrain myself :

this guy pipped on the end and not much action yet:

I've got one Silver leghorn egg pipped so far, but none of the Russian Orloffs, Welsummer, or Barnevelders have started. yI'm chuckling because DH is hanging out at the inCOOLbator, talking to the chicks- "C'mon little guy, you can do it!".

Congrats! That's super terrific! I love it when a plan comes together!

Since I was teasing Travis about photos - here are a some of mine :)

One of last years hatchings.

Some times, I want a broody to hatch out some eggs. So I built a really small broody-coop. It is about 3' tall in the front and 2 1/2" towards the back, maybe it's shorter than that. I sit it directly on the ground. Neither of these photos show it, but there is a small pop-door on the side you cannot see. The "open" side is covered with hardware cloth. I did that to let the rest of the flock take a peek at mama and chicks. When the chicks were very small, the pop-door opened into a small chick-proof run. After 3 or 4 weeks, I removed that, and let mama take her babies (3) anywhere she wanted. When the chicks were 8 or so weeks old, mama took them into the "big house" to sleep with the rest of her flock. At that time, all three of my coops opened up into the same run. So Mama took the babies into the coop that she was used to sleeping in.

Roof is hinged to allow access to feed and water - and to check on the new family.

VF.... I really like this little coop, when you're done with it just send it over to my place. Thanks!

Farmin Mama.... I feel so bad for you having such a tough time with your 'dream' house. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that the RIGHT one presents itself soon and is easy for you to close! Take care and see you in Monroe!

Yes... she has quite a few and more hatching in two days. She also has several that have started laying. I think she also has eggs available. I saw eggs but I'm not sure if she's selling them or hatching them herself.

I wish the weather had cooperated so we could have toured her place. I saw the Tunnel from a distance, but it was raining too hard to leave the shelter of her shed porch.
