yeah the thing is i'm looking for a puppy.   I've been checking out the shelters but i don't agree with their early spay/neuter.   every dog i've had that was neutered at an early age developed bone issues.    Large breed dogs shouldn't be neutered til a year old.    A large breed is what I need.  

sorry if i sound picky.   It's just it kills me to get a puppy that would develop health issues and not be able to be a service dog.    And I dont like getting adult dogs because the 2 shelter dogs i got as adults both bit me multiple times until I took them back.   Left me honestly terrified of getting an adult dog from the shelter. 

how about an ex-racing greyhound? As far as I know they aren't neutered until their racing career is over, at 2-3 years old. They are mellow, sweet dogs, at least the ones I've met, and there are probably more than there are homes for.

I don't really want to try to take a 2 or 3 year old dog. I currently have a dog that will never be a service dog, he's scared of people. I want a puppy so that there isn't any issues bringing a strange dog into the home. Also when taking an adult dog in there might be issues that wont come out til later. I don't want to just bring in a second pet. If I get a puppy there is a store down the road from me that allows pets in there, I could start on public access as soon as it is fully vaccinated so it would be use to people and everything right off.
Also for a dog to be a service dog they have to be in perfect physical shape. I believe that racing dogs are retired because of injury mostly, or health issues. Not for sure on that but I'm sure they get injured a lot racing.

I took in a 2 year old dog.
She was abused by her family and deemed to be a lost cause.

The first few months were rough. Passive/ aggression and potty issues in the house.

Now, she is the BEST dog that has ever owned me.

We had a rough night last night. William is a different kinda kid from my other 2; he's never slept well and the first 2 did, so it's rough sometimes when I feel like sleeping and he's up for 3 hours in the middle of the night and he doesn't even know why. I'm so tired today but we made it to sunday school and church service and all 3 kids fell asleep in their seats (William slept on DH). It was so quiet and calming to listen to God's word in silence without worrying about little people's needs. I needed it.

My first baby was like that too....hence, the reason she is an only child, haha!! Really, it's not the ONLY reason! I admit she has been a great kid once out of infancy.

I did some research on this and it sounds like these ex-racers can make excellent service dogs for various types of psychological and physical disabilities. It seems they have a lot of advantages, calm tenperaments, trainable, strong, long lived and tend to have fewer health issues than other large breeds. There are several organizations that specialize in training ex racers for a new career as service dogs. If you have your heart set on a puppy you might be able to find a younger one washed out of racing early, though I don't know how often that happens. In any case good luck finding a new dog.

Welcome to all the new peeps!


I have a small "surprise" hatch.... I put 27 eggs in on the 10th of Feb, pulled 20 due to being not fertile, The 7 I left in the bator I could not see in due to being thick and darker brown. Well today 4 hatched and another is pipped so I have 4-5 chicks that are Olive eggers.


Anyone interested? I don't have room atm and would like to sell them as soon as possible.

Papa is a Blue Ameraucana and mama is either of my brown egg layers. Jersey Giant x Black sexlink mix or her daughter by My last rooster a Buff Orpington.

They lay nice dark brown eggs and are good layers. Mixed with the Blue the girls should produce a nice Olive/green colored egg.

Decided to check in and say hello. Been working some pretty hellish hours lately, sometimes 60 hours a week, but taxes are slowing down a bit now.

My friends darn roosters are STILL HERE SINCE APRIL. They ripped up aother rooster of mine last week, so I tossed these meanies into a small cage and told her to pick them up. She said she would, but I've head that before. Now the poor mean roos have been in that small cage for a week, and I feel mean, but I can't have them loose with my flock. I want to just grab them and let them loose in her house at this point. She has 3 roos and one hen here. The other roo is nice, but I really don't need him.

After I get rid of the meanies and scrub all the blood spatters from my coop, and things calm down, I would like to get more hens. I'm tempted to have the broodies hatch some, but I don't want any of those mean genes in my flock, so maybe I will just get fertile eggs from someone else. How long do the bad roos have to be away from my hens for me to know that my nice roos are the daddies?

17 days minimum and I would not breed any rooster or hen that is aggressive. Most people over look the hens and if the hen is mean/aggressive then all her babies will be.

Demon passed on today

Threw the tears and pain I am searching for a good breeder that isn't over priced.      Trying to keep my mind off of him and on better things.    I would spend time with my chickens but it just reminds me that he's not here to watch over them.

Today I went and got a Gold Star from Pam at Raincreek!  She's only 2 days older than the 3 AMs I got from CGG yesterday.  When we got her home I put her in with the other 3 and nobody even batted an eye.  yippee for that.

She must have gotten very tired from the trip, although it was only about a half hour.  She's sleeping a LOT.  I've seen her eat, drink and poop, but she mostly sleeps.  I hope by morning she'll be more peppy like the others.  Do y'all think there is any reason for concern?  btw she was vaccinated for mereks and she is 7 days old.

Hubby has told me he really doesn't want to take my chickens to CA for the month I am gone.  I finally agreed to let them stay, watched.  He then broke down and said maybe I could get chicks in CA because there is no problem bringing them out of CA. (I really gave him a guilt trip about you getting chicks, Even Carolyn has new chicks) So I may be bringing some new babies home.  I was thinking of getting some Silkies.  Does anyone know of a good breeder down in the Bay Area/Sacramento area?  I saw one in Lincoln, Country Ranch?  Any input on what to look for and any advice on the silkies.  Pro's, Cons?  I will get some regular size chickens also but those silkies just look so cute...

I had to laugh, today we went to see Hubbies Mom in the nursing home in Bonny Lake.  I was telling her how last night I was sitting in my easy chair watching TV with a cat wrapped around my neck on the back on the chair and a RIR hen in my lap.  All 3 of us eating cheese-its.  I am definitely not a city girl.

I have been told 14 days.


Yesterday, the Salmon Favorelle rooster I have been tolerating broke the last straws - he went after me twice and then dug half the feathers off a hen when breeding. Aside from those awful traits he doesn't keep the flock together because he is clueless about warning for dangers. We have a young man in our "neighborhood" (all 5+ acre lots) who has so little. He was happy to take him off my hands. Weighing around 8 lbs, he is going to give that young man a few good meals.

I am not in your situation and it is difficult when it is a friend. I would not feel one bit bad about isolating those meanies.
