I only had a mix, but that was B.C. (before chickens). They are independant, which is desired for the job, and usually aloof with strangers. The ones I met in the vet clinic were a bit suspicious but certainly not aggressive, given the surroundings. I personally LOVE them and plan to get one myself some day. The two boogers I have now (a Cocker and a ShepX) were here also B.C. and I have neglected to work with them to desensitize them with the chickens and cannot be trusted with them off-leash. From what I've read, it's key to keep them around the livestock they are to guard most of the time (after many supervised visits as a puppy). Pyrs seem to have a great reputation as LGDs for the most part but remember they are all individuals and not all will succeed. The best thing is to buy one from someone who already has them around livestock, especially chickens. Anatolians are also of good reputation, but need a lot of socialization (which goes for most dogs anyway). Google something like comparisons of livestock guardian dog breeds and you should be able to find a side-by-side noting their different characteristics.Has anyone owned a great pyranese? They're suppose to be great livestock guardians ( with consistent training of course) your thoughts the breed?
Again, very sad for your lossesWell today has not been a good day. First, went out to feed the chickens this morning(I do FF) and found another Silkie chick(14 weeks) dead in the tractor. She was fine yesterday. Having some serious issues with this bloodline. No more birds from this breeder. Then I get up and discover the new dog, Rooster, has the runs and pooped in the crate. So he got a bath, good thing he likes them, Chance(Aussie) hates them. Now waiting for DW to get home so she can clean the crate. If I do it she will be cleaning up my puke too.![]()
You have not met my crazy woo-woo-wooing Cocker!!!!! Every morning WOO-WOO-WOO....everytime I come in from outside, even if I was only gone for 5min: WOO-WOO-WOO!!! It sometimes happens just when you start talking to her...stub starts wagging frantically, huffing and puffing starts, then WOO-WOO-WOO!!!Chickie Lady- just FYI- our aussie x lab "talked" in fact every morning he would come in our bedroom to "talk" to us and I swear it sounded like he was saying "gud morning". I think somewhere we even saved a recording of it. Our aussie x lab was hyper, OCD, chased anything that moved, including leaves, snowflakes, hail, ashes from campfires, fireworks, and more. He was adorable and lovable, but so hyper and OCD he was making us crazy.
I have not had much broody issue with the ones I have had.Are Marans generally broody? Just wondering. I can't find it in my breed book.

Thanks both of ya! I'll just keep an eye on my Marans. She's been hanging out in the nest box for very long day stints, and last night/tonight when I went to close them all up long after dark, she was in the nest box (after already having laid an egg both days). As soon as she saw me she came out begging for treats, but it's odd that she went back to the nest again after having laid in the morning. We'll see what she does!
You can build these on your kitchen table. (just put down 2 layers of corrugated cardboard- I've done it many times- besides, what are tablecloths for ?Bless your heart! Thank you for thinking about me. Funny thing is, just the other day I was at the "Big Boy's Toy Store" aka The Home Depot and figured I would make the raised beds from that very material. They also have 2x3 that I was athinkin' I could use for the supports.![]()
Now all I need is the "scratch, mulla, dble sawbucks, a benji," or get lucky at the casino. No, wait, that won't work, I don't go to the casino. Just making a funny, the cost is good and I can build them in the garage/shop.
Thank you again.![]()
