Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

Stumpfarmer, sorry for your animal losses, so much effort to have that happen.
Atleast your chickens are co-operating, today I had the best gather this yr. 1SS 1amercana 3 bantam cochin. 5 eggs from 8 hens, and the bantams eggs are as large as the speckled sussex!!
I was wondering if you could tell me the name of the rose start that you gave to ChickieLady a while back? I have lost 2 roses yr before this, too ill to do anything about till now.. is it the one in you avatar?
Thank you for any help. I hope the shoe search goes well. Shoes and purses are just nightmares for me to shop for, I must change my mind a million times.

Thanks. I'm up to 5-7 eggs a day, here, and trying to hustle round to get a new pen so I can set my broody, or whichever of the EEs is hiding eggs. The squirrel problem used up the few hours of help from healthy young people last week.

Anyway, the rose is Lyda Rose and is available from Heirloom in St Paul Oregon, viz http://www.heirloomroses.com/lyda-rose.html. The one in my avatar is the climber New Dawn, which is more widely available although also at Heirloom; it's an everblooming sport of the Dr. W. Van Fleet which was THE Western Washington rose of the early 20th century, capable of growing 60 feet into the north side of a cedar tree and blooming there.

Lyda Rose would involve less pruning.

OOOPS - CHICKEN MATH again!

Well now I've gone and done it. Ordered some chicks - SG Dorkings. Oh, well, himself has 25 ducks, so as long as I have less than 25 chickens I'm okay, right? I won't have to worry about separation until the fall. And if the little cockerels get along with the Barnie Cock, then I won't need to separate until next spring.

Went to collect eggs this morning - fell in the mud wallow, so had to do an extra load of laundry this week. Ick, mud and cackle spackle. Have to go down several times a day so the crows don't get all my eggs.

Hope everyone is having a good day - mine just got worse - doing tax paperwork

Hi all,

I posted in the new member forum, but thought I would also introduce myself here too as I am a Washingtonian (allbeit a fairly new Washingtonian).

Been enjoying poking around this site for some time and have loved all of the good information, awesome humor, and chicken camaraderie. Thank you!

We have six lady hen friends (Amerucana, Barred Rock, Buff Orpington, Rhode Island Red, Gold Laced Wyandotte, and a Dominique) and a surprise rooster (Cuckoo Maran), all hatched September 7th (ish) of 2012. They spent the winter in a very large cardboard box in our tiny house (never again), and are all happily outside in their awesome coop my partner designed and built. The gang spends their days 'free ranging' around our backyard, basking in the ever elusive Seattle sunshine, wading in the 'tiny stream' that runs through our yard, and 'hunting' for worms in the garden.

Just last week our Buff Orpington laid her first egg! You would have thought she won a Nobel Prize the way we celebrated that small egg. Its been about a week and she is continuing to lay an egg a day (give or take a few days). We are anxiously waiting for our other lady hen friends to catch on to how cool it is to lay eggs.

Anyways, I think that is enough for now. Excited to join you all!

Peace.

Does it produce tasty hips? I'm really looking for a rose that will grow well and produce lots of tasty hips since I love rose hip tea and jelly. The wild roses here suck.

Pigs bring people together.....
That sounds weird but that is what's happening here lately. We have lived her for just over two years now and have met a few of our neighbors and like all of them but one. But now that the pigs are in an area where every one can see them from the street, I have not only met more of our great neighbors, but also have some regular walking people that come to talk to the pigs and us about the pigs. I guess we should have put them out there a while ago, I hate that we are meeting these people now that we are deciding to move. We have one neighbor that can look right out to the pigs from their front porch and I have been told that the DW there goes to the store and buys carrots for the pigs all the time. Then today a neighbor I have never met, we have seen him and he helped us get the mail man unstuck last year from the snow and mud, came into our drive way. So I went out to see what he needed and he had food for the pigs! How awesome. He said he did not want to just through it over the front fence because he wanted to make sure it was ok and that I was not feeding them a certain diet for slaughter. Well they are for slaughter but we are just letting them forage on their own and they are doing great. Plus this means that some of our neighbors may be a bit sad this weekend as the pigs are set for Saturday. Oh well I guess.

I am looking for a Copper Maran Pullet around 6 month to a year old. Would love to have one in my flock. Anyone near Grays Harbor, Thurston County, or Lewis County let me know! :) I do have a Copper Maran Rooster to get rid of and lots of chicks this spring and summer...

OK so I am really having trouble keeping up right now!

hope ya enjoy it here This is a great place with LOTS of very nice people.

To those who have had recent losses / tragedies Sorry to hear and hope all gets better soon.

FYI I have been stealing time on a friends plasma cutter. I have 42 no mess chickens cut out. Not sure how many Will be done for Monroe but I should have several since I still have 18 from the last hatch !

Speaking of plasma. The latest on mine is that they are pretty sure they know what is wrong so now just a matter of repair time. Jeanine said she hopes to deliver it when she comes to visit Saturday but not sure yet.

Thank You Stumpfarmer, I order my new roses from heirloom all own root, the only way to go around here. Once in a while DH will talk me into a rose from local nusery then we end up with these mess's.
A shoe sugestion, I have a pair of mary jane's by Hushpuppy that have a slight heel. they are stable and I get compliments every time I wear them.
