Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

I'm going to take tomorrow off from work so that I can get ready to go to the Monroe show - and the only thing I'm bringing with me is DW :)

HA!

Oh .. and some boxes yanno .. just in case someone (not me honestly?) buys birds and needs to take them home (not to my house?)

For those of you who will not recognize me on sight - GOOD -- you will be easier to avoid :)

Well, that didn't go so well....Don't hit your refresh button if the page freezes while you upload a picture!

A GREAT BIG HUGE HELLO TO ALL THE NEW PEEPS!

I am in Central Tac.

Sweetlilbaby, your guys' conversation about PMR and BARF had me CRACKING UP! It could just be my childish humor though....!

I forget who mentioned Madrona, but I love it too!
We combed Titlow beach for the perfect roosting branch for the girls' coop and found a Madrona that eroded off the bank, best roost ever.

Robin, those old Oak Trees have got to be BEAUTIFUL! Hope you can find a place that will mill that branch.

I love the redneck chicken coop! Way to up-cycle!

So, it was gorgeous out there on Saturday, and because I want to cheer myself up (it is a year today my brother died), here are some pics and a video of the kids and chickens, enjoying the weather

Pay you no mind to the mess in our yard!

Love your Pics I can almost feel the sun. Your DD is Beautiful!!!
Those folks need to see a Dr.
I'm gonna wear a bucket in case we pass each other in the hall. Don't wanna take any chances and see anything that will cause me to see a Dr.
Wow, really? That's interesting. I can tell a draaaaastic difference between any egg from the supermarket ("free range" or otherwise) and the ones from our backyard - in taste, texture, and yolk size/color. Even amongst our own hens there was a huge difference. (I'm using past tense because I don't actually have chickens right now). The "flightier" hens (those Leghorns who liked to hop the fence) laid eggs with tons of flavor and super dark yolks, and the big fat lazy ones laid eggs that were sorta halfway between that and a higher-end supermarket egg. Perhaps the difference is less noticeable if you're not free-ranging a lot or if you're putting more hens on a smaller lot. We had five hens on about 1/3 of an acre, with lots of trees and ivy all around providing bugs and whatnot for the hens. Of course the feed can make a difference too. A friend of mine has an EE that lays gigantic green eggs that are the most delicious I've ever tasted, and I think it's because she buys super pricey feed in addition to plenty of space for free-ranging. At any rate, I'm a life-long fatty who loves to eat and I also have highly developed senses to the point that it's kind of a disability (I have to have white noise machines to sleep and special lighting in my house, for instance). So maybe I just pay more attention to this stuff than most people. Anyway, no longer giving advice here obviously, just rambling about chickens and eggs because after all, what else is BYC for?

FRESH taste best

Yay!!! I just found already laying hens for 6 bucks a piece. I am going to take a look at them in a little bit. They are missing most of their tail feathers, but they should grow back ok, right? I will have to keep them separate from my chicks for awhile, so I will have to maybe put them in my not yet usable greenhouse for a bit. He seems to have a lot of chickens, could stress cause loss of tail feathers or would other chickens have pulled them out maybe? They should be ok with a little TLC though, right?

Missing tail feathers could be a sign of mites. Before you take them home and even put them in the car, check them for mites/lice and if they have some don't buy them.

OK. I will check that out. I am assuming they will be easy to see? I am going to keep them separate from my chicks anyway, but don't want to take a chance on bringing home ickies that I have to deal with. Yikes!!

OK NOT trying to rain on yer parade. BUT. how old are these birds?? And FOR ANY NEW people PLEASE KEEP IN MIND.

ANY NEW chickens you bring home should be quarantined away from any others for 30 days.

Also for you new peeps. There are people out there who will knowingly sell you sick birds. There are also people out there who will claim they are selling you high quality when they really are selling JUNK. Please feel free to ask around. There are several of us who have been around a while and will give input about sellers.
I personally prefer people ask around about me before we deal on ANYTHING!

Here is my two cents.
I only buy from breeders it people I know, because you don't know what you are getting from just any Ol' person on the net. Even then you take a chance of bringing bugs or diseases that your chickens haven't been exposed to and your chickens can get sick and die. Even if those chickens look healthy for the 30 days of quarantine. They can show some signs of being sick from the stress of the move
It is always a gamble, and for $6 I would be worried about their age. I would think that they are old and won't be laying well. Mist people sell young layers for more than that because they have raised them and fed them but aren't going to benefit from the fruits of that labor. Just my thoughts. :D

That is why I asked the question. I willingly take any advice people can give, that's a big part of why I am here.

I am just going to look at them. He says he is just downsizing his flock, but I have to go see what they look like. He does not have pics posted, which could already be a red flag, but I figured it wouldn't hurt just to check it out since it is not too far from me. I definitely was not going to put them in with my chicks. The area where I was going to put these girls is not anywhere near the actual coop, though I didn't know to quarantine for 30 days, I figured a couple of weeks, so thank you!!

If it came with some advice I would get several dozzen. I have lots of expierence with day old on up, but this is first ime around with an incubator.
I just failed miserably on my first attempt. The one piece of advise I'd give is check your thermometer before you start. You'd be amazed at how far off they can be you can get the info in the learning forums or just calibrate in the BYC search bar.
