Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

CHICK QUESTION:

My 4 chicks are 18 days old now and they are eating sand so have grit in their little gizzards. What kind of treats (other than meal worms) would you suggest giving them? The reason I ask is that I want to teach them to come to me for treats. Right now they aren't all that crazy about people reaching in and petting them. I had gotten the impression that with regular handling they would be likely to hop onto my palm maybe. We hold them on our lap a couple of times a day -- the either fall asleep or try to climb onto my shoulder! And pet them in their kennel a few times a day too, but they would rather scamper! Am I expecting too much too soon? It seems to me they will only get more independent rather than more friendly, is that true? Three are Ameraucanas and one is a gold star (rir x riw)

What treats do you give to young chicks?

THANKS!

Sorry to hear this Rob. Not coming down on you just using your bad experience to help others. THIS is why one should always check your thermometer and Hygrometer well in advance along with pre-running the bator.
Yep there is always one part of the directions I fail to follow!!

They need to put the important stuff in the first couple of lines after that all I see is WaaWaWaa WaaWawAAA.
I'm not lost, I know where we're going and no I don't need to check the map OR ask for directions! Famous last words

I haven't ever given my chicks treats, but the chicks I held for longer periods of time are much more friendly with me and will come to me to roost on my shoulders. Also, the chicks I held for longer periods of time as pullets (between 6-10 wks) are more comfortable with me being around and will come up to roost, the ones that I didn't get as much time with are still a little skiddish. Now theyre all big and could care less. lol!

The punchline to the school lockdown story SadieSue and I mentioned : It was a guy carrying an umbrella.

LOL I figured it was something like that.

There was a shooting 2 miles from my kids school a while ago and they scared the bejesus out of me by announcing a 'shelter in place', which means we are supposed to lock doors and cover windows. I was working in the library at the time. no one said what it was about. i had internet on my phone and i called dh because i was freaked out, it was right after the CT shooting. The library door locks don't work well. I was in a hurry to leave once i was done in the library and once I left I realized I LEFT MY KIDS IN THERE, what was I thinking?

complete overreaction but they are just trying to keep kids safe. whatever it takes.

He loves all the animals, but I have to keep a close eye on him. A couple of weeks ago, he let my big QH mare out of her stall and out the front of the barn, with no halter or lead rope, because he "just wanted to ride her". UGH. I have not run that fast in a very long time. Here he is, having a morning snack with his other best friend, Nikita. :D
He's actually pretty reasonable, compared to my sister who actually got on the back of the rodeoer-neighbor's roping horse and rode him with a jinglebell jumprope around his neck (back in the dear long-ago of 1959 or so).

Yay!!! I just found already laying hens for 6 bucks a piece. I am going to take a look at them in a little bit. They are missing most of their tail feathers, but they should grow back ok, right? I will have to keep them separate from my chicks for awhile, so I will have to maybe put them in my not yet usable greenhouse for a bit. He seems to have a lot of chickens, could stress cause loss of tail feathers or would other chickens have pulled them out maybe? They should be ok with a little TLC though, right?

I would avoid birds that looked like that. That suggests that their current owner does not take very good care of them. They could have issues beyond what you can see.

And .. 6 bucks is way too cheap for layign hens on your side of the mts. Even over here in Yakima hens will go for 12 to 15 dollars. Over there, 20 seems to be the minimum?
