Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

I know it seems like a great deal, but it's worth the extra (in this case) $15-20 for a great healthy laying hen. Just my 2cents...

Now that I know for sure that I am going, and have missed all the carpool posts.... I am coming from Tacoma, and have 2-3 open seats in my car if anyone would like to pitch in for gas. PM me! First one gets dibs on the heated leather front seat.

Time to pack the truck for the drive to Monroe.

I think we are staying at the Best Western tonight. If there are others that will arrive this evening we should gather some place for a beverage of your choice.

To spot me .. I'm about 6' 5", full head of shock-white hair. ~24 yrs old.

I just installed a new set of meters for the incubator. the temp was right, but the humidity was way off. I have to get this right because I will have enough turkey eggs to fill it several times over very soon.

217 mile each way. Sheesh, the things I gotta do to meet peeps.

Speaking of I do have one smaller pink piggy planter left. flaming chicken has asked to buy the big one. So this is last call for the little one. Tomorrow I will be loading the car and then it will be too late.

This is a good chance for any of the northern peeps to get one of these little piggies. PM me if interested in this last one.

Oh! You are so talented CR! I wish I liked pigs now, but I don't

We (my DD and I, anyway) LOVE LOVE LOVE THEM!!! There are 4 layer chicks, 3 meaties, 2 turkey poults, 3 ducklings, and 2 goslings! Boy are those waterfowl MESSY! I read somewhere "they have a special relationship with their water" and they weren't kidding! The goslings and poults are so amazingly personable! The way the goslings look at you make it seem that there is more of a brain in them than the rest. The separating wall already needs to be opened up between the 2 brooder pens as these guys are extremely active and busy!!!

AWWWWWW! There's so cute!

What a wonderful way to spend the afternoon! Beautiful pictures!
Thanks Chickenwings! I have to try and keep up with these professional photographers on here!

How do you keep up with all the posts here? I missed couple of hours and BOOM --- 200 posts already.
My recipe, go to work 8 hours at a job that does nothing, that allows you plenty of oppurtunity to do things like, learn about chickens, and plan a wedding

Hey MamaHenCarrie! Welcome aboard!

Good morning everybody!! I forgot to give the update on Sophia yesterday. I checked on her before DH went to bed the other night and she had moved right in the middle of the other chicks to go to sleep, so I left her out in the coop. I made him go with me to check on her in the morning, and she had perked back up and was running around with the rest of the golden girls like normal. So, I guess she must have just been traumatized by all the action in the coop, thanks to DS and the muttleys. I have now Logan-proofed the door, so that won't happen again. I also sat him down and let him know that he is not to enter the coop without me with him and that the dogs are not welcome inside. He said he understood, but he is 5. I did tell him that if I catch him near the coop with the dogs, that I will spank him. That seemed to make the light bulb come on. Poor kid. He loves all the animals, but I have to keep a close eye on him. A couple of weeks ago, he let my big QH mare out of her stall and out the front of the barn, with no halter or lead rope, because he "just wanted to ride her". UGH. I have not run that fast in a very long time. Here he is, having a morning snack with his other best friend, Nikita.

Handsome guy!
Love your Pics I can almost feel the sun. Your DD is Beautiful!!!

I'm gonna wear a bucket in case we pass each other in the hall. Don't wanna take any chances and see anything that will cause me to see a Dr.

Thanks robj! The sun was awesome, hope it makes another apperance soon!

Quote: I'm glad you were able to find some that are affordable. BantyChickenLuv, that's good advise. Just use your best judgement about 'em.

CHICK QUESTION:

My 4 chicks are 18 days old now and they are eating sand so have grit in their little gizzards. What kind of treats (other than meal worms) would you suggest giving them? The reason I ask is that I want to teach them to come to me for treats. Right now they aren't all that crazy about people reaching in and petting them. I had gotten the impression that with regular handling they would be likely to hop onto my palm maybe. We hold them on our lap a couple of times a day -- the either fall asleep or try to climb onto my shoulder! And pet them in their kennel a few times a day too, but they would rather scamper! Am I expecting too much too soon? It seems to me they will only get more independent rather than more friendly, is that true? Three are Ameraucanas and one is a gold star (rir x riw)

What treats do you give to young chicks?

THANKS!
Hehe, you sound like me! Here chick, chick, chick, chick! Mine are slighty older than yours and just started running up to me when I go downstairs to check on them (feed them). I just keep some feed in my palm and they'll come and hang out in my lap for a bit

I did have to move them out of the dog kennel, There are eight of them and ran out of room, so in our basement is an old coal room about 16'x12' that we didn't have anything in. In the chickens went! I was a little sad they are in such depressing conditions with no natural light, but this weekend the roof is getting painted, rain or shine, and the primer is already up. So outside they will go!!
IT'S OFFICIAL!!!

MY DD & I WILL BE IN MONROE TOMORROW!!! YAY!!!

No fair! Trying to convince DH to let me go, there is some bamboo in Renton he wants to get tomorrow, and what's another hour drive, right?

He's actually pretty reasonable, compared to my sister who actually got on the back of the rodeoer-neighbor's roping horse and rode him with a jinglebell jumprope around his neck (back in the dear long-ago of 1959 or so).

LOL! Great stories guys!

Ah, you were the person who put shavings in my purple carrier at the winter show, then?

Sorry I was so distracted; I was worried about my husband being healthy enough to actually drive us home.

Think about what you look like (godzilla) coming over to the brooder and reaching in. It takes time for them to get used to godzilla being friendly, even at this age. If you are persistent, slow moving, and patient, they'll be friendly in no time and want to be held (though not all of them will have the personality for snuggling). Keep enticing with treats a couple times a day and move slowly.

OMGoodness!! I would have had a heart attack. Though, I have a feeling that's where we may be next, if we don't get him started soon. I guess we better get started with the basics. Soon.

I would avoid birds that looked like that. That suggests that their current owner does not take very good care of them. They could have issues beyond what you can see.

And .. 6 bucks is way too cheap for layign hens on your side of the mts. Even over here in Yakima hens will go for 12 to 15 dollars. Over there, 20 seems to be the minimum?

OK...just talked to DH, we agreed to go ahead and just get more chicks instead. I told him the concerns and why I was second guessing, and he agreed with all of the advice given. I decided it would not be worth the gas in my Suburban if I have to come back empty-handed, so I will get my brooder back into the dining room and off I go to get some more babies!!
wee.gif
Thank you all for the advice.

Handsome guy!
Thank you!! He is a handful. Actually both of the boys in that picture are a handful. Nikita is in a Macaw sized cage and I can usually find Logan sitting in the cage with him. Crazy kid. At least I know that the bird will have a home once we are gone, as he will outlive DH and myself more than likely.
