NEED HELP PLEASE, ASAP!





Came home to find my BSL sitting very still and puffed up like a bowling ball with a head on top. I noticed earlier today she was in the nest box a long time. I found a broken egg with tissue paper shell. When I approached her she didn't move, she's usually very friendly and active. I felt her abdomen, from her vent toward her belly. It feels like there is something there, maybe another egg? She layed an egg yesterday. Is it possible that she's egg bound???? I need suggestions!!!! What to look for, how to deal with this. The only things I've ever dealt with was bumble foot.

I'll seach elsewhere, but I came to my friends here first. The day is growing short, and tomorrow is Monroe, this is not good timing.


ETA: when I touched her, she un-fluffed her feathers, she's not permanently bloated up like a bowling ball.

How old is she? Could she be broody or pretending to be?

I have a hen that likes to pretend for a day the gets off and goes back to normal. She's done this a few times a month for the last year.

She's about 2 y.o.. She's not in the nest box, it just took her a long time to lay the tissue paper egg that I found. My DH doesn't think she looks all that bloated, but she's lack luster. I'm going to go watch her and offer her some scrambled egg and see how she handles it. It would seem odd to me that she could be egg bound when she layed an egg two days in a row. RIGHT????? She's my favorite hen. :-(

Funny story.... I was talking to a friend today and she asked me what I was doing this weekend... I told her I am going to a chicken show.... She looks at me funny like WHAT? I said no I'm serious the kids and I are going to a chicken show and I am gonna meet a bunch of ppl from the chicken chat, which reminds me I need to stop by the bank after picking up the kids from school. By this time she is trying not to bust up laughing... she goes No wait there is a chicken chat room... I said well technically its not a "chat room" its a thread but yes. There's a Washingtonians thread n were all gonna meet up and have a potluck at the show... by this time shes laughin so hard you would think she gonna choke.... She said so let me get this right youre going to a chicken show with the chicken chat room people to buy chicken stuff? I said well when you put it that way.... it sounds about right... And we both laughed...

Non chicken ppl simply dont understand LOL

And they all will try to get as high as they can regardless of how hard it is for them to get down, and not all will use a ladder...they just jump, and can get bumblefoot or even crash & break their necks.
Nest boxes 1-2 feet off the floor is fine.

My nest boxes are two feet off the ground and then the roosts are above them. If I had it to do over again, I would put my nest boxes one foot off the floor then my roost at three feet

But this was my first coop and I was learning as I went. I was reading and asking questions on here. I changed a few things as I went. My first coop will withstand a 7.5 earthquake

the barn will fall down around it but it will remain in-tacked

I used 10 pounds of nails putting it together

BTW, I will have bunnies (due 3/21) ready by the end of April, if anyone is interested. Purebred NZ, will know more in a few weeks. I'm ecstatic! I went out this morning to her beautiful nest.

I would consider rabbits, but probably next year or the year after. Need to get hens established first. Besides I'm not sure DH wants more rabbits after his ex let them run loose in the house (and not house "litter" trained) along with her min-goats. As of now our cats are confined to the kitchen, front hall, and family room. They are no allowed upstairs. So any rabbits would be outdoors only, even all winter.

functional? Parrots? no...they are solely in the domain of children you sometimes think twice about having got. Turkeys do a lot of bug eating and dethatching in the yard but will deberry a bush in no time. Muscovys can be the best city duck there is since they don't quack. But you have to watch that they don't mate in the wild. Some states have laws against that. But!, they love mosquitos, bugs, and slugs, and wag their tails for you when it's feed or treat time.

Do you have any pictures of a Muscovy? I'd like to know more about this. We have a severe slug issue (boggy/marshy part of the yard) and would love a slug eater, but don't want the noise of geese.

Thanks C.L. Yeah! All the pain in my arms has gone; first time I have been pain-free in those limbs for over 2 years. Now, just got to let the neck heal.

Eating is problematic, but am recovering well. If anyone ever has to consider this surgery, let me tell you it's TOTALLY worth it.

yes.........but if you must do something & suspect she is egg bound, try a warm bath....slow & spa like and massage her bottom....and sometimes a wee bit of EVOO in the vent will help.
Then a nice warm towel & soft blow dry~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
