Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

'Nother newbie question: how long can you set aside eggs for and still have them be viable? In the basement? In the fridge? What is ideal?
If kept between 45-60 degrees(ideal) they start to loose good hatch rate after 10 days.

Hi, Washingtonians!
People, please, help me to find a reputable breeder in the Western WA. I do not want the birds from a hatchery or Feed store. And I am interested in heritage breeds only. I live in Tacoma - Federal Way area. I found Bradley farm in Tacoma, but it seems they are very hard to reach ( I tried Facebook, e-mail - waiting for a reply for almost a week now, and there is not telephone number on their profile). Help me, please!!! I would love to have some Orpingtons, Marans, Buckeyes, Leghorns or may be other heritage birds.thank you in advance!
Kidcody on BYC is in WA and does GORGEOUS English Orp's, but she is not cheap.

Quote: Yes while we DO have a lot of breeders. I am sure there are some breeds that are not readily available locally. but for the most part I think we have a very nice selection locally.

And you have a transporter on call from Oregon that drives to Tacoma 5 nights a week

They are SO pretty!! I think Honey is my favorite, she has such a pretty pattern! I took some pics of my chicks that are in the henhouse yesterday, my poor little brown leghorn is the ugliest one yet going through the change. She looks like she has been through the ringer. She is going to be pretty when she is finally feathered out, but right now, UGH. I wish I would have thought to do little photo shoots with them though, so that I could track all the changes. That is a really great idea.

Thanks. They do get pretty ratty looking don't they? I'm really surprised how quickly the fluffy down changes to crazy puffy little feathers. It's good to know that your little leghorn will quickly get past that! We'll see how long my bright idea lasts... they aren't going to cooperate with the photo shoots I fear. Yesterday one flew off the chair, luckily I was able to grab her quickly. I think she was as surprised as I was; but I got it on video!

i just wanna cry out of 6 dozen eggs NOTHING hatched. What am I doing wrong? I am doing all the same things i use to when i got 100% hatch rates. I just don't get it.
What temp did you hold at prior to setting in bator? How old were the eggs when they went into the bator? What was the temp and humidity. Were the eggs turned daily until day 18? Had the eggs been washed? Had the eggs been refrigerated? How many days did you leave them in the bator? Do ypou know the eggs were fertile??

They were sent to me from someone on here i am not sure exactly of their age. I kept the incubator at 99.5 before and during the incubation. kept humidity at 45% for the first 18 days, they were in an egg turner during that time. Took them out and raised humidity to 60-70% by the time they went to lock down i was down to just 2 dozen eggs. most of those i know had movement in them at time of lock down. but there were 5 chocolate colored ones i couldn't see in and a few green eggs i couldn't see in.
But you would think at least one would hatch. I even let it run an extra 5 days

What breed those suppose to be? Too bad all of those quitters.

Well I have quite a few different breeds in the incubator right now. These four were, Mille Fleur Cochin, Black standard cochin, Minorca and Sumatra. I have 80 eggs in there right now so 4 quitters right now isn't bad. Thanks everyone.

Well, feeding was sure fun this morning in the torrential downpour. Good thing I put the horses in last night, good grief!! We will all be hunkered down today from the looks of it. I took some chickie pics yesterday, but only had my phone with me, so there were only a couple that turned out ok.

This is Flo-Jo, my little brown leghorn. She, so far, has been the ugliest during transition, though the pic doesn't show it well.

This is Buckbeak. She/he was sold as Ameraucana, but I guess is an EE. I am thinking it may be a roo, but am not sure how to tell. The tail on this one is much larger than Hermione's though, that is what made me wonder.

This is Magic, the boy that I hit in the face with the fork. He gets a little excited at feeding time, got in the way when I was putting out hay yesterday and ended up with a hat. He is a Morgan/Friesian cross and the love of DD's life. DH gave him to her when her first horse passed on at 32yo.

Last, but not least, here is my little country bumpkin wearing pajamas and daddy's boots. He likes to come out and "help" me feed, which translates to telling me how to do it. He wears those boots everyday, it's a wonder he doesn't fall flat on his face. At least he remembered his coat.

Love these pictures! Haha! Magic just can't wait long enough, so pretty much he smacked himself with the pitchfork you were holding!? Lol!

Does anyone know of a farm I can work on to learn the tricks of the trade? Or does anyone know of or have any land they would lease me (for not too much and some produce)? Any references are greatly appreciated!
