Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

A short cooling off period won't harm them. I know some people will disagree with me, but if my power went out, I'd throw a blanket over the incubator to help retain heat. You have a fairly big one, yes? That will also retain heat longer than a small one.
I have the hova bator geniesis 1588

Sry I had to take the baby to go get her shots... Trees down everywhere... 47 mph winds and my back gate on my fence is broken... And they are saying its gonif it does na get worst!!! NO We dont have any gas... I am hoping it doesnt go off and if it does I will break out my camp stove to heat up water bottles... I read they are fine up to 20 hrs if they temp drops below 90? But I called my husband and told him I need to order the 12 vt adapter.. so that way happen again I will have a back up. So nerve wracking.... UGH

I hope you're power stays up. We have a generator because we're out in the country and near the bottom of priority on fixes. Learned that during last years nasty storm. That thing is worth the space it takes.

I thought I would share one of my new chicks I got down here in CA from CaliforniaCountryRanch. A sizzle silkie. I am enjoying these babies so much. Back to taking pictures. This is #1 of 15. Two weeks old.

We need to get one... But we are planning on selling this house asap and moving.... W are just waiting for his military pay to come in so we can put this house on the market... So my husband wanted to wait so we can get a really nice one at the new house. Which I totally agree with dont wanna waste money buying a small one but UGH I am on pins and needles tho... Being the first hatch my daughter will be very upset if we loose them all.. Thanks everyone for all your advice....

Hi everyone,

Very sad news to share. My favorite hen, Ameracauna, who had just been laying for a week or two had a terrible situation Saturday night. I can home around 1:30 a.m. to find her roosting with the other two birds. But I saw a huge mass hanging out of her, at least 6 to 8 inches long.

Long story short we had to kill her to put her out of pain. I knew what to do for being egg bound, but nothing we did worked, or even seemed to help. We put her in warm water, we tried to manipulate the egg out, she was whimpering (who knew our birdies could whimper?!) and it was obvious that nothing we could do for her would save her.

To describe the situation in full detail here would be pretty graphic: her situation was much worse than ANYTHING I could find online or within this community. I could not bear to take a photo of it. The egg was physically outside of her body, but so were a ton of her insides. It was gruesome.

So around 3 a.m. we killed her. This is my first flock, my sweetest bird, my only blue egg layer. I was a WRECK on Sunday and am still pretty choked up about it.

I am now to the stage where I want to get a new bird, but I am pretty sure introducing one bird to an established flock doesn't go so well. I have been searching Craigslist for blue egg layers. I thought about chicks, but husband isn't interested in spending all that time.

Advice?

Also, I was hesitant to even share because I really don't want to hear "oh she sould have been fine." So please, even if you think this, please don't tell me that. It would make it ten times worse and truly, what I saw was horrific and unusual and I know she would not have survived.

On another note, I did get 7 eggs outta 8 hens today.

Skinny, my slender, affectionate RIR is teasing me about being broody but not real sure at this time. I keep finding down feathers in all the usual places but not enough to tell the difference on any particular hen. Hoping at least one of them go broody, I would like to see some "home made" chicks running around with their momma.

I think my "getup and go" has got up and went with this weather. Got things todo but keep coming up with reasons not to do them.

Check her breast mine pull their feathers out when they are getting broody.
yep, mine too. But not enough down loss to tell yet. Momma hen that went broody last year was completely bald on her belly/breast. Unfortuantely I had no roo at the time so I had no viable eggs for her to set but I did let her broodiness run its course. She continuely gathered them to make a clutch, I am hoping she will go broody again this year.

So sorry TC for you loss. My rabbit isn't proven and this is her first litter. I'm hoping for the best, but not holding my breath. Best of luck with your other litters.

Anyone have any tips on what to do if the power goes out when incubating eggs? I am only on day 4 and I dont wanna loose them but its really bad here crossing fingers it doesnt go out!
I was worried about that with my first hatch, wrapped the bator in towels and blankets while I was at work, just in case. The car adapter sounds like a good idea too, or they have those battery starter thingy majiggies that have plugs and radios on em... Not sure what that would run though.

Sorry for your loss flirty.

I saw an ad on CL for some blue egg layers, she has eggs and chicks and possibly older pullets as well, I'll grab her email for you.
