Ooooo... Irish are on my short list of dream dogs for when my elderly very large dogs snore their last (they're asleep right now: 15 YO Chesepeake Cow Retriever and her 16 YO Aussie/Border Collie father).

So, what kind of chickens do you have?

Right now I've got a hodgepodge.  All 5 week old babies, I've been out of poultry (almost entirely) for about 3-5 years but I went to the Prairie Hatcher 4-H auction and bought a bunch of chicks just to support the club that was so great to me way back when.  There's a lot of Dark Brahma bantams in the brooders, a lot of White Polish in both sizes, some of what I hope are White Langshan large fowl, a pair of Silver Campines, what looks like a pair of Gray Dorkings, and some other stuff 62 chicks in all, but most of them won't be staying long term, just bought to support club.  I will keep some of the Brahma and Polish, and definitely the Langshans if they turn out, I'm undecided on the rest.  I'd prefer to specialize in rare large fowl and am hoping in the next couple years to acquire and focus on Langshan (might have some already!), Chanteclers (hard to find) and White Faced Black Spanish (ditto) The rest will be side operations of whatever strikes my fancy.  I'm used to having a lot of birds around and have been missing them greatly the last few years.

As far as Irish goes, his biggest flaw (other than the whole terrier thing of always needing to be fenced or leashed) is that I can't trust him to not kill birds, otherwise fantastic dog and personality

Hey, if in the long-off-future you have Dorking trios to sell, please let me know- I think they're cool.

I'm looking at small/medium traditional terriers for several reasons, but rodent control is high on the list; my birds are and will be under wire because my cousin-next-door free-ranges and there isn't budget for a chicken-proof fence so that I can free-range mine. I'm tired of gophers eating the roots from roses and whatever perenniels I love the most. That and, after feeding and carring for big dogs, I'm seriously interested in downsizing.

I googled Garden Sphere coop tour 2013 and this is some of what I found When: Saturday, July 13, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.
Where: In the Tacoma city limits. **Carpooling or other green alternatives is recommended**
Why: Coop design ideas and community fellowship

That sounds like so much fun!! I will have to check that out. I think my mom might enjoy it too, then maybe I can transfer this addiction to her. Yay for "harmless" peer pressure!

I was trying to clear some wet hay out of Ian's run when all of a sudden the Invader Chicken raised her head and scooted over to the sheep pen; about ten seconds later it began to hail. I got wet, she didn't. I also haven't gotten back outside and gotten that job started again. OOPS
