Have to thank robj for his heroic work in framing the "airlock" for the Hamburg Extension and picking up the broken glass from the storm door, especially. I'm going to hang wire on the far end of the run tomorrow so I can block the dogs out and clean up the interior, and by next Thursday I hope to figure out whether I'm going to have a framed coop or just an improved plastic and wire shelter.

He also nudged me to remember to haul the loppers out of the house and trim out two hanging canes from the Brenda Colvin rose. And since I had company, I finally got the chicken bedding composter set up (for certain values of "set up") and the stinky feed-heavy mess from Ian's run cleaned up. The guy who's getting the chickens forgot that he was going out to dinner for his birthday today, so I'm locking Ian up tonight so he won't be such a case tomorrow.

A great all round day like this should make up for that last bitter bit you had.

I'm going to stick my neck out & say that no one here does think that -- if you read thru Chickielady's full story (not the newspaper article) I think you'd see that she didn't either.

I believe when confronted by sudden, IDK, catastrophies, for lack of a better term. -- we all just react - without thinking.  There's no way to really know what you would do in a given situation.  It's pretty harsh to judge someone on that. Someone made a comment earlier about fight or flight -- think that's pretty true.

the fact that CL was carrying, gave her some confidence that those of us who don't, don't have or understand.  But I KNOW when I'm with my German shephard - I KNOW, I don't fear strangers, or goofballs.  Not that he's mean - he's not - but I KNOW he would do anything to protect me.  I did confront some wackos in our very rural neighborhood some years ago - they were scared s*** less - when they saw my dog.  They asked if he was 'a killer'  Told them "if you don't threaten me, he won't threaten you."  They'd been casing out some neighbor's houses & left shortly after. I never would have confronted them if I'd been out walking alone.

I guess what I'm trying to say, is we shouldn't judge, we weren't there.

im going to weigh in too. You're right, we weren't there. I think the real problem is the way the newspaper reacted. Calling her a hero was very inappropriate. Maybe her action could be justified as adrenalin and the consequence of lack of training in tactical situations, but it definitely wasn't heroism. Heroism is putting your life on the line to save another person. Pulling kids out of a burning school bus, diving into freezing water to save a drowning person, etc. Not rushing into an abandoned property with a gun to defend it from... a desperate, probably unarmed, most likely homeless family. CL, glad you and the other people involved survived the encounter. It could have been a lot worse.

For the record, I'm a gun owner, have actually fired a gun in self defense, have had the equivalent of LEO basic tactical training. If anything knowing I could easily kill someone makes me more likely to to avoid situations where I might have to.

So my gender confused, crowing, silkie laid me another egg today. I wouldn't have thought it was hers if I didn't watch her lay it. So maybe she has been laying sporadically. Her egg is the same shade as one of the other girls.

It was so nice out today. I got some sun and the dogs played in one of the streams.

The chicks were happy there was no wind and mama took them out for bugs and grass.

Oh My gosh, that is one cute momma and her chicks. Really like this picture.

Sent the kids towards the house and while doing so, called 911. Better that she took a pic of the license plate but it is what it was. Also, as I understand it, she did not know a burglary was in progress when she approached the vehicle, after all there was a woman and a teenage girl in the vehicle and could have been just attempting to turn around or been lost.
I think she made a Tactical mistake by confronting the burglars instead of retreating to a safer location, she did not make a mistake of escalating the situation.
It is also good to review actions after a day or so when one is calm. When you're pumpin' at 120+ and you have an adreniline rush one is not calm. That's the reason for repetitive training.
Betcha they will NOT come back into the neighborhood.

Farmin Momma - I LOVE LOVE LOVE your pictures!!!! That looks like she is having a whole lotta fun in the snow!!! Your property and clocks are beautiful, when did you start collecting them? I never heard of an outdoor clock collector, ha!

Thank you very much. Yeah, all the kids were having fun in the snow this morning. My DD just happened to be wanting me to take her pic.
I am just a clock collector, but these clocks came with the property and was the biggest reason I wanted this place. If you Google (or Bing) the name "Jimmy Collier" you can read about the man that used to own this house. He was amazing, and is the reason that there is a race track at the Monroe Fair Grounds. At the track, they use to call him "The Candy Man" in a good way. When we move we will only be taking one of them with us, the two faced black one. I have to leave the four faced one, the sale of our house depends on it sadly. But there was also a grandfather clock that came with the property and that will be coming with me as well.
Yes we are moving, to Monroe a house on 9 acres and not right in the city. Very quiet there.

They also had taken our furniss a week before. Then men did not have guns, but they both raised what they had in hand at me, one had a copper pipe (from the house) and the other had a crow bar. Which they both either dropped or lowered when they saw my gun. I did step away from the door once I saw them there and made sure I was at a safe distance.
Also, we have sought out tactical training and will be taking such class very soon. Not that it means that I will be perfectly prepared for if anything like this happens again, but I will have a better idea!

My little "mixed" bunny, Smudge, kindled last night - 2 days earlier than expected. I think it may have been because she is small and was bred to a large buck, or she has a lot of babies. We usually leave them alone the first 24-36 hours, especially with this doe. She's a fabulous mama; we haven't lost any from her yet. She was bred to a Black Otter Rex, and I'm hoping for a nice girl to replace one that ran away last week. Ungrateful bunny.

The Champagne D'Argent kindled last weekend - she kicked them all out of the nest. We put them back but they were dead on the wire the following morning. It's really a pity; she had ten gorgeous babies.

It happens...and alot of it can just be plain nervousness.
Often a Doe will kick their bunnies out when they feel a predator is about...so any animal lurking around can make the Doe do that, in that way, she sacrifices her offspring, but saves herself for another day.
Any cat, dog or roaming possum in the night can be enough for a nervous Rabbit Momma.
The worst you can do is disturb her when is is birthing & kindling.
Most does are extremely territorial, and hate their cage or nest disturbed, hence why you add the doe to the male & not the male to the doe.
Some Does gets down right ticked when you move their feeders or water bottle....and will stomp all night long and I have seen some rip down a new water bottle...just cuz they did not ask for the new addition to their cage.
Buns is funny people, they hate each other, they are extremely territorial, and having their cages face each other is bad in some circumstances.
With the Does more so than the Bucks.

I should take a photo of my anti-cat fence on the orchid table; I also moved four of the dwarf Phalionopsis to a trough on the window sill after that (editorial comment witheld) cat dumped them on the floor and broke their ceramic pots: they're thrilled with the idea.

Soon as the house is done, and we are moved in, I am getting more Orchids & will come pick your brain.

Really, that's funny, we just had a long discussion about moving to "The Convergence Zone" (you have to say it like Twighlight Zone). The company I work for is headquartered in Woodinville and had a position open up. Alway something to think about...I have been a south Sounder all my life, don't know if I have what it takes to hack it up yander!! HAHAHA!

That's an interesting story about your house, I will have to google him! I like Monroe/Marysville! You already found a new place?! On 9 acres?! Well, I can't figure out what part about that statement makes me more jealous!
