Modern medicine has also dramatically increased the number of times a woman is sliced open to get her baby out because there are "standards" of care and if a woman doesn't labor to the exact modern medicine standards, doctors have the right to open her up and take her baby out of her surgically, and quite unnecessarily. Why is it that the number of necessary hospital transfers from my very hands-off midwife to the hospital for a cesarean section are under 1%, whereas the typical American hospital has a c-section rate of (always) more than 30%, if not approaching 40%. That's completely unacceptable. Modern medicine is a menace and not a help when it comes to safe births and the very sad thing is the MOST US women don't know this or research it at all. More women these days also suffer dramatically from PPD due to the completely unnatural methods and drugs used during labor and delivery. The American model of pregnancy and birth is broken and needs a major fix. Even some 3rd world nations could teach the US a few things about what is safer for mothers and babies during pregnancy and birth. It's sad. I 100% believe that many, many people are alive today due to modern medicine, but healthy women giving birth is NOT an area that is being helped in hospitals. Intervening in a healthy woman's labor with pretty much anything at all is almost always unhelpful or harmful. Period.
And yes, I do believe all women have the right to feel comfortable where they birth, but I also don't think MOST women research alternative birth options; ALL of my friends had NO clue that there was an option to birth anywhere but a hospital, with an epidural or huge amounts of drugs, and almost everyone I know is completely afraid of birth. Our bodies were designed to give birth, there's nothing to fear. Women are strong and courageous and can give birth naturally and feel so empowered, but many are never given that chance due to modern medicine. Quite sad.
