Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

O
I especially like Plan B!!!
But in the mean time, I think it's your personality that will lead you to the answer.   I am notorious for changing my mind over time, analyzing then re-analyzing trying to find the BEST.  For me it would therefore be best to try 2 breeds, then go to several shows and read lots of BYC threads, then add another couple breeds.  Repeat 'till happy!  :D   When I rush I'm always sorry.

Oh BYC is so dangerous...before I found site I was pretty much set on three breeds, now I read a breed thread for fun and I'm like "oh it'd be awesome to have those!" Or "I remember when I raised those, I wonder how different I would do it this time?"

And this is after over 19 years raising birds. LOl

Ohhhhh... I'm glad that happened to someone else! I had one doing that a couple of days ago, what a racket! Amazing that they act like a screaming baby.
I've got 16 in the back room that sound liket hey are being murdered when we open the brooder lid.
I definitely think we need to make sure we give them lots of attention once they are in the larger pen so they calm down.

Chicken wire, burried, will deter diggers.  They dont like the way the wire snags their claws, so they stop.  I have used chicken wire as a way to stop diggers from getting in/out.  But chicken wire as a 'cage', will keep feathers on one side, and .. well .. feathers on the other :)  Fur -- goes where it wants to through chicken wire.

:)

Plastic "hardware cloth" or hex mesh both work great as subterrainian barriers- they don't rust, fall apart, and become hazardous (I raise cattle: wire in the ground kills) and because they're reinforced by the dirt they're buried in, they don't stretch. I suspect they wouldn't work against badgers or wolverines but lesser animals are easily deterred.

I prefer cage wire to metal hardware cloth for above-ground use; it's more expensive, but it doesn't pop apart if it gets stressed too much; I think the "welds" on modern HC are basically hot dip.

Also: don't make any unecessary cuts to wire: wrap the frame at corners, don't cut the wire and fill the inside of the frame. This is at least as much to make the cage harder to break into as to save time and damage to your hands, but all of those things are important.

OH- and buy the longest rolls of wire you can afford, always. a 25 foot roll of any width is almost always less than twice the price of a 10 foot roll.

Widths are less important, but never buy wider than you need, it's a waste of money and makes extra work.

One final note: if you're putting a cage against a line fence whether it's humans or dogs or farm animals on the other side, I'd advise getting livestock panel for that wall of your pen, and attach the smaller mesh stuff on your side of the panel.

OK so I am really having a hard time keeping up. Partially because we are going so fast and partly because I have been pretty busy. Besides the normal things at home, trying to get items made for 3 big upcoming events and trying to get a big coop (well kind of 4 coops) expansion going and done.
Here is a bit of what is keeping me busy.
This is the dragon I have helped my friend make. There are some thing over 5000 scales on it. I cut out about 90% of those free hand with his plasma cutter. I also made the spine and wings

I designed and build most of the head.

Here is Steve for perspective.

And more recently. I was asked to make something that looks similar to this for a wall hanging. For $300 (

) it is only about 6' long. It will be on the walls of a law firm in Oregon by next week.
