I never expected that in getting chickens, I would become part of this bigger community! And you are so sweet! I took a photo of your gals for you: They seem to be doing pretty well! Now if it would only stop raining! They're a little tentative, getting used to new surroundings, but they're sticking together! The EE is SO sweet and docile! My Barred Rock is similar, but not as easily handled, so this one is just a sweetie! She's pretty much my husband's new favorite!

Oh they don't look unhappy at all! I hope they get used to their new home soon. I'm sure they will!

Chickens are a food source, livestock. Dogs are companions and most of them have other jobs as well.

I do not understand why people have a pet relationship with food. Not saying its right or wrong, just that I don't understand it.

Isnt a "pet" somewhat a matter of choice? I mean, in some cultures dog is considered a delicy. I've eaten it, and it's pretty tasty. That said, I will not be eating my dog any time soon.

My chickens are more like yours, livestock. They have a job (eggs or meat, or both). I don't consider them pets. But just because I don't think of chickens as pets, doesnt me that I cannot understand why others do keep them as pets. I know folks who would never eat their own chickens.

Well, they may not eat their own chickens, but if they eat chickens at all, after having chickens as pets, I find it very weird, and sort of cannibalistic. Like only eating your human enemies, not your own tribe.

If I were to keep chickens as pets, I don't think I could eat ANY chicken. But then like Matt said, I don't make pets of my food.

I could eat a dog if I was hungry enough. And quite honestly, I'm confused why Americans won't eat horse, but they eat cow!

ewww! i have a profound fear of spiders after i was helping a friend convert an old shed into a coop and a 1 1/2 inch one fell and crawled up my neck! it didnt bite me but i had a had a rash there for 3 days

I don't use coccistat (well I suppose apple cider vinegar is supposed to do that naturally so if that counts, I guess I totally agree) and my wormer is not a chemical because I don't believe in that stuff, but I suppose I agree in general principle. No sulfradrug, no tetracycline in any form, no vaccines, no chemical wormer, and just to cover my bases no antibiotic of any sort.

Edit: No I agree I'm still learning as I go. But what I learn is that the natural old ways are best. I guess I misread what you meant before. I won't ever "learn" to be the one that medicated at the drop of a hat, or gives my chickens names and treats them as pets, or coddles them. My apologies for misunderstanding.

Edit 2: As a matter of fact we're all learning. The day you stop learning is the day you die. didn't some philosopher say something about that?

You are exactly correct, although I cannot remember who said that....and you are also correct about the other things.
One thing we all learn (hopefully) is to relax, and enjoy our animals...and not panic at the drop of the hat and run to antibiotics....some "old ways" are still the best, and some new things are good too.
Rotating various types of wormers, for example, or rotating grazing fields and crops, prevention is what I am getting at here...and prevention is key to preventing alot of issues in our lives.

Stopping in to say hi

. My newborn is getting her first teeth so its been a tough week.... I just wanted to update everyone.. today is day 20 on lock down for the bator so far nada...

Not a peep or anything so we will see... I switched my chicks and poults to wet food and let me tell ya LIFE CHANGING!!! Thanks all for your suggestions. I learn so much here and I am so very thankful. Also I have seen all 3 of my poults eating and drinking

. Not saying they will all live but at least they are less likely to starve out.

Just make sure the poults are not in shavings, raise them on sand until they are older, cuz they will eat shavings, plug up & die.
Not the brightest bulbs in the pack !

unless dusting counts i have only medicated my chichens 2 times!( because they were actualy in danger of dying )

I am going, but I am not going to show anything. Have to take oldest DH across the river to Portland for a sailing regatta Saturday and Sunday. Just not very convenient this year to bring birds. But I will be there to check out the birds for a little while on Saturday.
Hopefully next year I will have more birds to show and no DS and team mates to drive around. He will hopefully be busy with college and a job! Lol!

You do mean oldest DS, right ?
