Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

Miley came over today to help with assembling my 'coop/shelter' for the grow out coop.... It was wonderful having another set of hands, as well as someone to help me to keep it simple :)

Here's some pictures from today...

I still have chicken wire and river rock to add, as well as metal roofing panels on the bottom of the pen to further secure it... But the hardest part is finished.

The shelter is a pallet with shingles on top, the Bach is 2' high, the front is 3'.... The pen is roofed with cleat roofing panels, and 3sides if the kennel is tarped, so I just have to secure the bottom edge all the way around. I will prob add a low wattage red light for the first couple of weeks as I am putting them outside with the youngest few almost feathered in.... But I figure with no wind gusting through, the heat lamp, and many friends, the should be fine :)

Thanks for the pictures!!! Love your design! You're going to bury that wire that's in the inside, right? Since they will scratch & kick rocks, sand, and dirt off of it, they might get small cuts in the pad of the feet, which could lead to bumble foot. And trust me, you don't want to deal with that.

You and "Miley" do good work!

The chicks are going to love it!

p.s. Dash's brother is going to a new home tomorrow morning. Down to just my girls now. Whew!

Wow...took awhile to get caught up tonight. Today was busy. Had to get a stall ready for the awesome pony that we found for the little guy. He is a Shetland, and he has the most awesome little personality I have ever seen in a pony. The little girl who has him now is 7 and grooms him completely herself, including cleaning his hooves. Score!! We will bring him home hopefully next weekend. Then, oldest DD came over with her boyfriend and visited for a bit. This was the first time meeting him and he is a really nice guy. That was very refreshing.
I found it took 2 offerings before my girls really went for it. It has to be rather thick like oatmeal, but not watery. They didn't touch the watery feed I put down once. So, I put some dry feed in a bowl, add a little water, watch it soak up the water, add a little more feed, then a little more water until I have as much feed damp/wet as I want. I also used chicken scratch (crack) to get them over to the feed, then dropped some on top to get them to peck at the wet feed, then they just kept feeding.

Hope this helps. It might take a couple of tries with wet feed before they "get it" that this is now the food source.
OK...will try again tomorrow. I was a little discouraged when they rejected it. Good to know it's not just me. Thank you!!

So glad you are getting around a bit. Do you have help now? I had a major surgery on my leg and remember well how frustrating it was to try to hobble around and do simple things like get a cup of coffee from point A (kitchen) to point B (couch).

This weather is truly horrid- has anyone checked how much rainfall we've had? I know we had almost 6 inches in a rubbermaid tub that was sitting in the yard. We also had hail bigger than peas here today- and it was funny watching the hens running for cover- and all trying to fight for the space under the utility trailer. I just checked KIRO news- they said only 1/3 an inch of rain- was that INSIDE the newsroom? Cuz I clearly had a LOT more than that!

I'm pretty bummed about the hail - I planted 100 tulip bulbs in the fall, which had just began to open up, and the hail beat the crud out of them.

We were all getting rather stir crazy here, so we headed out and ran some errands, and then DH decided it was a good idea to go to Red Robin. My son can eat more fries than anyone else I know, and since they have unlimited Gluten free fries, it was actually a bargain to take him out to eat.

. I am pretty sure anyone who has ever known a 15 year old boy, could probably appreciate the FACT that "all-you-can-eat" places- are real budget savers for boys with hollow legs!
1/3 of an inch, my foot. My creek and pasture are saying otherwise. The hail was crazy big here too, my chicks were all standing inside the coop with their heads poking out watching. I didn't think to grab the camera before I went out to check on them. That is very sad about your tulips, they are one of my most favorite flowers.

Sprinkle a little dry feed on top to get them pecking at it. They will figure out it is food, then watch out
Awesome!! I will try that when I give it another go tomorrow. Thank you!!

That jasmine tea sounds wonderful! I'll take mine with a smidgen of honey, or maybe you'd like to join me for some rooibos with fresh grated ginger in it? I make it in a french press.

With all this talk of tea, I must show off my new $2.99 acquisition from Goodwill. I've been looking for a replacement kettle since I left mine on the stove a few months ago and burned it up, warping the bottom. The one DH bought at Big Lots had such a flimsy bottom it made metal pinging noises when it heated up- not a proper kettle. This one has a nice thick base

I'm off to make some rooibos- can't decide if I want to make a batch with those tiny rose buds for the rose petal flavor, (still have some in freezer from Oly Co-Op's bulk section) or fresh grated ginger. Love hot tea on a cold day!
That is a beautiful kettle!! Thrift stores are the best! There is a new-ish Goodwill in Yelm that often gets some good stuff, but I really like to go to the smaller thrift stores too, because a lot of the time they are not as picked over as the bigger ones. I am currently on the hunt for old silverware and the Looney Tunes collector glasses from the '70's. I am making my herb markers with old spoons. The glasses I already have 2 of and want a full set, but the prices on Ebay are insane.

When I go to Goodwill with my mom and aunt, we look for all of the angel figurines and such and make a nice display. Mom pretends that she doesn't know us. Last time, we found a football star bobblehead and several other memorable characters (a provocatively-dressed cat and a terribly creepy child, among others) and placed them around a Jesus. We stick to angels mostly, but some of the non-angels were just too good. We hope that other shoppers appreciated our creation.

anyone near Beacon Hill in Seattle? Wish I would have seen this- I was right on Beacon Hill today!
Free egg cartons!

We give eggs to mom's co-workers, but they haven't returned their cartons. We used to have tons, but now we have none. We have about five full cartons, and the rest of the eggs go in a bowl in the fridge. I'd leave them on the counter but the cats love to be jerks by fishing the eggs out and rolling them off the counter. Mom prefers to put everything in the fridge anyway, so in they go. I just wish people would honor my polite request and give back the cartons when they're done. They're getting the eggs for free, so I think it's only fair.

Long story short, I need to buy some egg cartons.
