Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

How did the brabanters do?
out of the 12 eggs 2 were infertile, 1 was red ring of death day 7. At lockdown I had 9 eggs 5 hatched on day 22. Today is day 23 and the other 4 are still in the bator. I dunno if they are alive still or not but I am gonna check for heartbeat tonight and go from there.. But so far 5 happy chicks bouncing around. I will get a picture of them all together later tonight.

Thank you!! I haven't found a difinitive post on exactly what to do for this. She seems like she may be improving a little bit, the only reason I say this is because she keeps pooping; it's definitely diarrhea but there's still scant solids in each pile. I will have DH pick up the red wine after work, and will stop the grit for now. Will mix the bleach solution now too.

Jess, sorry about your girl. Hope she feels better. I learn so much from all of you. Glad we have a place to share.

It's in the soft area at the top of her beak. I was sitting here typing one handed while holding her so I didn't go into enough detail. I put her back with her sister and observed for a while. There doesn't seem to be any interest in the red spot so I'll just let it be and keep watching.

Those darn little buggers managed to get out of their pen and into the hens pen. The one that got the owie was a bit frantic when we found out and I think she probably nicked it on the half-inch wire. I'm stumped where they managed to find an opening to get out of their area and into the other one. But I put up a couple barriers where they might have found a place to squeeze thru. It's a double fence with space in between -- I thought I dun good -- obviously not good enough!

If there is a will, they find the way !

Two things
1) You can find a vet who will remove his vocal cords, and this is expensive ! or

2) You can caponize him, in which case he will still be large, but will not be so protective and will not crow, and he would then be sterile and not mount the hens.
thanks for the info; now how do I find a vet who works with chickens for this? I would look into the vocal cord procedure but want to know more about it. Anybody know a vet? thanks.

You can harvest them for the worm bins!

I love doing that with a toothpick.
My entire property, ALL ACRES, ALL compost (the size of a dump truck) and ALL garden beds, and somehow, ALL potted plants (even indoors) ARE FULL OF SNAKE WORMS !!!

These guys stretched out can be as big around as my thumb, and a foot long !!!

They are chicken chokers !!!!!!!!

I have often thought how cool it would be to do a secondary business here:
1) chookies & eggs, and

2) Fishing worms !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We also have red worms.....this is worm heaven here !
I just picked a few out of my shower !!!
They crawl right up the pipe into the shower !

You might want to put some marbles in that water tray. They fall asleep so quickly at that age they sometimes fall asleep with their face in the water and drown. After getting them this far you wouldn't want that to happen.
AWWWWWWWW they so cute...
Almost as cute as ducklings. LOL

Someone did that very thing last year, but I do not recall whom it was.
maybe ask CR ?
If I were you I would start by asking your local vet & see where it leads you.
We do have a DVM who sometimes visits here...maybe we can ask her ?

Now I gotta remember her name......yikes, CR I NEED YOUR HELP HERE !!!
