Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

thanks for the info; now how do I find a vet who works with chickens for this? I would look into the vocal cord procedure but want to know more about it. Anybody know a vet? thanks.

makeing dinner for the wife.
start with homeade clam chowder
a simple baked fish with a seafood topping
ritz crakers, 2 cups cubed bread, parmesean, two eggs, sauteed onions, dried tomatoes, old bay, garlic, butter, ground pepper, crab, shrimp, bay scallops and a little lemon
roasted asparagus

Both kinds of bugs can be treated by Eprinexing your birds, and giving them a dust bath to get into as they wish.
I then spray down coop & roosts with Sevin (3 oz per gallon of water)
Don't forget to spary floors, walls & nest boxes as well, DAILY.
With the friendly Great Northern Red fowl mite (the bigger mite) usually 2 applications of Eprinex will work, once a week for 2 weeks.

With the nasty teeny tiny smaller-than-a-speck-of fine-ground-black-pepper Depluming Mites, you may have to do all the above and apply Eprinex once a week for 3 weeks.

I have also greased the roosts with either softened Vaseline or lard (Manteca found in the Mexican food/grocery area usually) as the little buggers STICK.

I think I will do all of the above, but I caught my birds in question, and I don't think the depluming mites are the problem. For one thing, the buckeye is back in full feather and back to laying. The wyandotte looks scruffy, but when I caught her, her skin shows no signs of irritation (redness, swelling, oozing, etc.), and many of her missing feathers are on the back of her head where she couldn't have pulled them out.

Again, though, I'm a newbie, so I'll assume the worst and have a serious scrub fest this weekend. Can't hurt, and every time I think about mites I start itching. Better safe than sorry!

As far as Eprinex and Sevin, if I ask for them at the feed store will they know what I'm talking about? And when I vaseline the roosts, my birds will have the softest feet in Eatonville.

Maybe Einstein can invent a clear plastic astronaut helmet with cooling fan and filtration.............................

I already have it. Just not the filter. I have actually taken the fan part out and installed it in my welding helmet to keep the lens from fogging and it helps keep my face a little cooler.

Quote: Kim's vet is in Bellevue. i think his name is Bruce ??? well known for his chicken care.

The Vet that was on here and does this procedure is CMSDVM in Tacoma. Sorry I don't know her real name. When I contacted her about it she said it worked best for chickens under 6 weeks, but there were other things available. I decided to not keep the roo, so never followed up. Not sure how to contact here. She hasn't been on in a while. Maybe there is an email or link to her clinic on her page.
