Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

I have been soooooooo tempted to get ducks. I saw the ones at the feed store and wanted to snatch all of them up. I have no idea how I would keep them here with 2 cats. My cats really want those little yellow fluff balls that hatched- and they sit by the fence watching them for hours every day. I suppose I'd just have to put extra wire around the bottom of the spare dog kennel until they were bigger than my cats and could fend them off. I mean, I even have a turtle-shaped kiddi pool ready for ducks! I have a dog house that's ready for ducks- all I don't have is ducks, right? I always loved ducks when I was a kid, and still think we need 2-3 of them here to eat all my slugs. I'm just not sure what kind to get. Maybe y'all can help me decide. I need friendly ducks that are on the quiet side and not too "invasive" . Reccommendations? Indian Runners? Muscovy? or Ancona? (I don't want pekins.) I've been leaning towards indian runners......
Mine are Indian Runners.

The daddy duck is a Khaki and the mama duck is pure fawn.
Parents are from Holderreads' rare colored Indian Runners selection.
The babies are going to be Fawn, Khaki and looks like I got a Fairy Fawn as well. Not sure.

They are green eggeres.

I want ducks. What kind? I'm interested in the eating kind :)

Gout is a form of arthritis, so maybe there is a connection? I have been drinking cherry juice.

Odd thing for me is ... I used to drink too much beer. Like six or eight a day. Around the holidays, I wanted to loose a few pounds so I stopped drinking the beer. Then I got Gout. Now, if I have more than two beers - I'm in for it.

Time to test out how a good single malt effects my toe :)

Life Extension has a decent page on gout- you might check this age out if you want to know things you can do to reduce gout:

Some folks take cherry extract in powdered form, in capsules to bring uric acid levels down. I've had issues with elevated uric acid myself, but so far, no gout, thankfully. I used to take the cherry extract capsules (3 per day) myself, and kept them around for when I ran out of frozen cherries or juice.
BTW- Costco had 5 lbs sacks of frozen organic bings recently. I've made cherry ice cream and smoothies. Yum!

Hahaha!! CR, T-Hi, BlueDucklings, RainMom - Y'all have been cracking me up all morning

this weekend!)

Oh, boy...I think I am going to be a baby when my daughter starts becoming a big girl. DFH talked about her going to college this morning and I got a little teary eyed....I really think Walt Disney had it right with the cryogenicly freeze them thing....sigh....

Speaking of DFH - he goes to the recruitment office today to see what they say (and what his sign on bonus would be). Such a tough choice really, but I know he'll make a good one. I haven't said anything about it, because I know I don't have to. He's a good man and will do the best thing for us. LOTTSA PRAYERS!!!

Chickie Peckies are doing good! This is their "coop adjustment" period, and well, the rain has been helping. They haven't been out much, but when they are out, I still have to wrangle them back into the coop, so they will stay inside a wee bit longer.

Hope everybody has a very blessed day!!

BlueDucklings - They are so adorable!!

I know ducks are much better than chickens for slugs.
But............... do ducks destroy gardens like chickens?
Is it one of those things where you need to get your ducks into the garden area before planting to eat as many slugs as possible then remove them after crops planted?
I don't know what chickens are like...
idunno.gif
they scare da-ga-gibbers out of me.

My ducks just roam the grounds and sometimes I fence off an area for them to "attack".
My garden beds are 18" off the ground, so I would put them there for a day or two as well, on top of the beds.
Slug control plus fertilizer.

Rest of the time, they patroI at ground level. Works for me. I hate planting at ground level. Hurts my back.

I think they eat crane fly larve too. Havent seen crane flies in years.

Busy, busy thread.

1) Happy birthday Jess!

2) Chickens are awesome, ducks might just be awesome-er though!

(Which makes me ponder why I'm getting back into chickens but not ducks...uh-oh)

3) Anybody know what used Sportsman 1202 and Dickey Incubators go for around these parts? I've got three that I'm thinking about selling.

1202's are free to folks named Dave. Let me know where I can pick mine up.

Thanks,

Dave

Another TJ's thing: great dried Bings! I like them to make mere fruit into actual dessert, also good with salads.
