Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

Surprised...my 20 day old chicks were off heat for over 9 hours today in the house. My house is at 68 degrees and they were fine for 7 hours straight without the lamp, then another 2 hours later this evening! That's great! Heat lamps cost a darn fortune to run! My goal is to have them off daytime heat entirely by 4 weeks, and out of my darn house making a dusty filthy mess by 5 weeks with only heat at night out there too.
My two (at my house) only have their own generated heat in their bathroom. It gets pretty warm in there at times, so I turn on the fan to draw in some cooler air under the door (and freshen the room) and they are doing fine. The LB was purchased March 1st, and the Dominque from WaLady is a week older I think. I can't wait to get the pen finished so I can move them outside.

Fluffy in the bathroom crate (12x18x24) and my iPod cast a yellow shade on all these.

Niqui outside the crate.

Here they are wandering around in the area of the bathroom they are allowed into when I'm there.

You can really see Fluffy's neck feathers coming in here.

So, you can see they are growing and I think they are ready for the pen, but it isn't secure yet. They love their twice a day grass and go for that before the chick feed.

I had the "meat group" and 3 Catdance Silkie chicks off heat during the day by 2 weeks old. They only have heat lamp on from 8pm to 8 am and temp under the lamp is only 50 degrees. The last few night I have left it on all night because temps here were in the 30's(they are in the non-insulated shed). But no one is chilled. I have been weaning like a broody would do so they are feathering in faster and tolerate the temps better faster.

Wowza! You're good at following directions! That's why you were in the military and that's why you can pick up a new sewing machine and a sack of feed and make a grocery bag! And that's why you can construct me a wonderful, perfect chicken run in a single day. Awesome Dave, that's so cool!!

Dang that was quick!!!

Finally got the "big girls" (7 weeks old) out in the new 3-level coop. DH has thermostat set at 55 on the heater so they don't get cold, LOL; he is so funny.
I told him they have feathers now and will be ok, but no we had to have a heater too. Actually am hoping they figure out that the 3rd level is very warm and
will go there to roost at night. I may have to crawl up there and show them.
Next he is adding remote camera so we can keep an eye on them.

Looks great! They seem very happy with their new digs!
