Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

Sorry to disappoint you, but like so many other trusting people you've been fed a lot of mis-information. The person at Edgewood Chics is probably very nice, but if she, like so many feed stores is mis-informing people about breeds, she's not doing anyone a favor.

As others have said, there is no difference in nutrition in the eggs from different breeds. And the correct information about the breeds you've mentioned can be found at:
The Ameraucana Breeders Club
The Ameraucana Thread at BYC
The Araucana Club of America

Just like other animals, such as dogs, if you breed a purebred with another breed or non-standard version of the breed, you can't honestly call the offspring the same thing. A lab crossed with a mut or a german shepard may look much like a lab, but it's not. If you breed an Ameraucana with something else, the chickens may lay a pretty egg or have puffy beards, but they are called Easter Eggers, not Ameraucana.

Just because "He" posts on the internet that he's a French model, doesn't mean it's true.

Jess.... You're such a great Mommy! Don't worry, he'll be just as sweet tomorrow as he was last week!
Love that Pinata Cake, I want to make one for my DGDs!

Oh... They ARE so cute!!! I love my BSL, she's such a gem. I wish I could help out, but I'm at my limit. I hope someone else can take them.

I've recently gotten 3 wheaten Ameraucana chicks from Cowgirlgrace (Lyn A.) in Gig Harbor. They're almost 7 weeks old and and they've been quite friendly so far. I believe hers have a pretty good reputation for that and being good layers. A few other people have also gotten chicks from her this spring, maybe they can add their thoughts.

There are a few others in this group that have small children.... Hey Parents.... what breeds do your kids do best with??

My black sex link is super with little kids and she's a good layer, too. I saw someone on this thread with some extras just a day or two ago. And, I think VelvettFog breeds them. You can find a variety of sex link chicks at Rain Creek in Port Orchard. She breeds her own rather than shipping them in from commercial hatcheries like the feed stores do.

You might consider Black Australorps, too.

ETA:
Flighty meaning they fly a lot or are jumpy? He means the nervous type of flighty. My EE is flighty, too.

I thought about EEs I guess it would be a good lesson for my son that eggs come in all colors. I'll look into them. Is there a specific cross with an ameracauana I should look for?? When you buy an EE they don't usually tell you what the breeding background is. In fact, most people that sell EEs call them Amreicanas, Americauna, Aracanas, or some other mis-spelled version of Ameraucanas. They usually don't know the difference. I'd suggest trying to deal with local people that you find here on BYC that have a good reputation within this community.

When I start trying to absorb all the amauracauna, americauna... ok, just that far by itself just makes my head implode. I just want good ol' fashioned buttless auracaunas thank you

But to the excellent question of little kids and chickens!!! Having had the delight of having a kid and dealing with 4H for a few years.. back when I still had my first flight feathers
gig.gif

Really loved the following chickens when working with the young ones.. Buff Orps, silkies, Cochin Bantams. The Blue standard Cochins are really laid back as well. And for the kid who wants the biggest friendly rooster on the block so s/he feels like they're running with the pack I'd say Dorkings!
D.gif
just my personal opinion. But, that's what I got ^^
I'd also throw in Favorelles, but be picky on where you get them from if you intend to show them at all. I've had a couple of VERY scruffy ones. Most wonderful lil guys in the world.. but they were oh soo not pretty, lol.

I have small kiddos who are very involved with our chickens.... They are 9, 6 and 3.... They each have their own jobs on tending to the girls... We have a mixed flock of girls... Rhode Island Reds, Buff Orpington's, EE's and Blue Laced Red Wyandottes. In their opinion they like our Orpington's the best. They are big and fluffy and are not as flighty as the EE's. Our BO will actually squat an allow you to pick them up... My 3 year old is often running around the yard picking up and caring a chicken. My daughter (the 9 year old) also likes the EE's because of the different color of eggs... they can lay pink, blue, bluish-green, or green eggs and you never know what they are gonna lay until that first egg so thats also fun.... I would suggest getting more then one breed n seeing what you like... Hold them as chicks and get them use to being handled and make sure your baby knows how to act around the chickens as well... As that can change the behavior of the chickens... crazy baby running around = chickens running and squawking for its life = not so good experience for anyone....

With that being said I dunno if you are ready to get chicks but I hatched chicks this past weekend that are looking for homes.... I also have 2 week old hatchery pullets. We have Brabanters, Black Sex Links, RIR's, Golden Sex links and White Leghorns.

OK, so I hatched 10,

then sold one,

then sold 4

...yup, I got 2 ducklings left.
2 ducklings + 2 mama ducks = 4...my limit.

Got to love duck math.

Hope they are girls.

OK so I have been seeing all your post about ducklings and I must say they are so very cute... My husband is trying to convince me we need some... if I may ask some questions as I know nothing about ducks... are they loud? like do they quack a lot? Can you house them with chickens? Do you have to clip them so they dont fly away? Can you have just one or do they do better in pairs? Thanks in advance

HAHA i can see that!

in the market for high egg producers, probably only be able to have 4 max and starting with 2. i reeeeeaaaalllllyyyy want blue ones and found someone local who breeds "true" ameraucanas. I'm also drawn to laced wyandottes, both of which the same person is breeding and selling. how "gentle" are they? i have a 1 1/2 yo old son. i probably also need ones on the quieter side.

EarthMother -- I missed a key comment in your post. Pure ameracuans will not be "high egg producers". Some breeds that I consider to be high egg layers are:

Leghorn (white egs)
Rhode Island Reds (brown)
New Hampshire (brown)
Any Plymouth Rock (brown)
Orpingtons (brown)
Austrolorps (brown)
Sex-Link (brown eggs)
Most EEs (blue/green - sometimes pink)

Laced Dottes are a fair choice - but I'm not sure they'd make my "top 10 best layers" list.

You asked what I meant about birds being "flighty", Carolyn was right, flighty is often times used to describe birds who are skittish, easily scared or always nervous. I've had Ameracauna's and I didn't like them because of their nervousness.

If I was choosing birds for my little kids - I'd get chicks not adult birds so that the birds get used to humans easier. I'd probably select -- 1 Buff Orpington, 1 Black Ostrolorp, 1 Golden Sex-Link, and an EE. During the spring and summer that should get you about 15 eggs a week +/-. I'd also consider those breeds more docile than others, and they'd all look very different.

This thread moves blazingly fast, so don't worry about trying to read every post - most of us don't. We just skim stuff looking for things that pique our interest, or our name specifically.

No question should go un-asked :)

Today's duck math lesson by Blueducklings...

10 minus the one equals zero
Add the two mama ducks, and the two remaining ducklings and you have four total

or..

10 ducklings plus 2 mama ducks equals 12 -- with two ducklings remaining, plus the mama ducks you have four total

or...

10 ducklings minus 1 duckling, minus 4 ducklings plus two remaining ducklings plus two mama ducks equals four total

Heck -- no matter how I quack them up, you have 4 ducks.

We had mixed birds, Chickens, Muscovies, and Welsh Harlequins and they lived happily together.

The Muscovies are almost mute - ducks have a sweet trill, and drakes a soft hiss.

Usually get two or more so they don't get lonely, but sometimes you can substitute. My sister has a duck and a rabbit pair that live very happily together.

They WILL bond with humans if they are raised from day olds - beware, they are addicting!
