Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

Well the one little chick that hatched on day 28 is eating, drinking, and pooping well. It's just really confused on who it's mommy is. The hen that went broody a few days ago keeps trying to steal it.

The rooster keeps trying to feed it as well. I swear he can tell what breed the chicks are and gives extra preferential treatment to silkie chicks.

Anyone have experience with shipped eggs? Just did my 7 day candle on my first batch of shipped eggs ever, decent fertility but all the air cells are bigger than normal and jiggly compared to local eggs in same tray. Advice? Or continue to let them develop and just see what happens?

I've hatched quite a few shipped eggs this year. And the ones with the larger air cells hatched just fine. What is your humidity at?
I would just let them develop.

I run humidity at 40-45% days 1-18, then up it to 60-65% and that's always worked great, just have never shipped eggs in before. The ones you've had success with have the air cells been jiggly? Should I maybe turn the turner off for a couple days and see if it firms up at all?

The air cells weren't jiggly. I would turn the turner off and see if that helps. But definitely hand turn the ones that have normal air cells. I'm sure you know that though. Happy hatching!

Ok, talked with Purina. There is still no reason being given yet as to why they went to a 40 lb bag but they did say that it is supposed to be $4 cheaper than the 50 lb bag. If you do the math the 40 lb bag is $.375 per pound and the 50 lb bag is $.38 per pound. So it's basically the same price except it means buying more bags of feed, possibly making more runs to the feedstore, and just more back and forth loading and unloading the truck and feed containers.

Also, the gal I talked with - Beverly I think - in customer service was VERY nice, very sensitive to my complaint, and very timely in getting back to me with an answer. She was also completely unaware of the change.

So again, if you'd like to see the 50 lb bags come back, I'd encourage you to make the call.

P.S. Ogress, I pay the same prices for each here as well.

God Bless,

We have a chick! Or, at least one I should say, since I only saw one blue shell and heard peeping. I am sitting on my hands as to not disturb Miss Blueberry. I brought her water this morning too - she drank quite a bit. Good mama! I'll keep you updated

My oldest duckles, two pretty Muscovy girls, are laying eggs! My first ever duck egg scramble was really good. I wasn't sure if I'd like them, as I heard they taste a little richer, but it was for the better. I don't even have to stress about choosing to incubate or eat them - I don't have a male. Hopefully one of the four baby 'scovies is a boy, but I'm not seeing any tail curls, so it's not looking good. I might have to go on a hunt for a nice male for them. How did I end up with mostly cockerels in my chickens and maybe all girls in my ducks?

You won't see any tail curls on Muscovies - they don't have any! The caruncles will develop more on males, and they will soon start to outgrow the females. By adulthood they will be almost twice the size of the females. Also, if you have other kinds of ducks, they will often interbreed with "scovies - so watch out for mules!
