Hi! Those first few weeks with new chicks are the best. They are cute and if you're handling them they are super sweet.
So I didn't know we had giant earthworms over here. I went out to candle the eggs under the broody. (day 3, I see some veining. I only lost a little blood to her)
I was shining my flashlight on the ground and thought I saw the guts of something. I leaned in for a closer look and it was two worms mating. They were huge! And boy are they fast. Just as soon as I was reaching, they were gone into their holes. So I went looking for more and saw a lot. I was just so curious and managed to catch a couple medium ones. 8+ inches. The big ones which were faster than me were as big around as my pinky and swear they were a foot long.
Maybe it was the light drizzle we've had off and on the last few hours that brought them up. I haven't seen anything that huge before here. Just the regular worms which I move to my raised bed now before the chickens can eat them.
I learned how to catch worms without hurting them as a kid. So I did release the ones I caught and they took off and dug back into the ground.

Hi Sarah! Welcome to the wonderful world of chickens! They are SOOOO much fun. Who would have thought chickens have personalities, I was so surprised. I hope you love it as much as we do! This is a great place to get answers to the many many questions you'll have along the way. So, of course it's raining, the hired hand is coming today.
I need to move, clean, and fix an old rusty 6 foot diameter watering trough for the stage two (aka "my word, chicks grow fast!") brooder, and I'm unthrilled with the idea of doing it in the rain, when my joints were just nicely loosened up in the heat.
On the other hand, the part of me that lives on a cattle farm and was freaking out about the pasture being chewed down already is fine with it.
I'm still minus my own computer, trying to figure out how the heck I can possibly afford even the least expensive possible Mac- after twenty-odd years I'm not going to try to use a new platform, not to mention all my photo files in iPhoto and other material on the back-up drive, where I can migrate it instantaneously to a compatible system (Macs will take Windows files given the right software; it doesn't work t'other way round).
Long, long week just passed, too much time in the car, this would have been a GRAND day to shut down and do the least possible anything, but the hired hand has quit her day job and is of to make her fortune as a house cleaning chore doing miracle worker and today's the day she's available.

. That is a crazy price for a rooster. I usually sell mine for $10.00 but I ask about their flock and their coop. If they get kind of gooey eyed when they talk about their hens then I feel ok about it. I usually get that gut feeling that says no when they answer the add if they are planning to eat the rooster.
It wasn't someone going to fight him, there are birds bred specifically for fighting and a Marans isn't one of them. If they were going to use him as a "punch" or training bird for a real fighting bird, they can get them really cheap at the local auctions, and wouldn't pay that much for one that wouldn't last long. I think you missed out on a good sale!

could you transfer your pics to a thumb drive and then copy them to a new system? I dunno, just asking.
