Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

The White boy is a second gen mix, he has a straight comb and too many hard feathers and has squirrel tail. Correct on the Splash. The Black could be a very dark Blue possibly(wouldn't know for sure unless you put it under a Blue boy). And the other two look like Buffs with a lot of "smutt" or poor colored Partridge. I am breeding BBS and have a Buff and a Porcelain. Have done much research and VERY active on the Silkie Breeding and Genetics thread. These are my opinions on the colors(prolly not show quality) but they make great pets and awesome brooders, even the cocks. Enjoy them. We love ours and it will be hard when we start selling them next year(gotta build up my breeding stock)

These were free chickens so I am sure they are not show chickens. The two reddish ones look different as the "partridge" (pin feathers on head instead of pom) has darker colors mixed in and the other one (puffy pom) is solid colored. I just wanted to get some eggs I could hatch but if the rooster is a cross then there is no point using him. Should I try to find a better rooster to use with the hens or should I give up on the idea of hatching eggs? If I were to replace the rooster I would need to find someone to keep this guy as a pet because the previous owners wanted to be sure they would be pets. I have never had silkies so I am ignorant about them.

Here are some additional pictures the prior owners took of them.

Dog Run - Coop (Olympia, Westside)

If anyone is interested, we no longer need ours and would like to sell it. PM me if interested. It is one of those wire runs with a full size door. We got it from Del's. The roof bows didn't make it through one winter storm, so himself put on an extra heavy duty roof. It also includes a light, roosts and nest boxes.

Well, sorry its been so long since I have been on here. Ive been really busy with work and the new horse. Here is an update of whats been going on. Final count of chicks is 3. Took all the eggs away and have gone back to daily collection. All of my pullets have begun to lay and I am getting between 6 and 10 eggs per day from my 12 hens. I was able to find all my extra roosters homes so I am down to just Whiski, my papa rooster and his 12 hens/pullets as well as the 3 babies. My black lab fetched up one of my chicks and brought it to us. thankfully she did not kill it but did injure one of its legs. I have kept a close eye on it and she seems to be healing well on her own. May always have a limp but momma hen took her back and has been very good to her.

All of my horses are doing wonderful. Khlassi, my old Arab is summering at a friends house down the road like he has done for a past 3 summers. I have acquired another horse, an 18yr old overweight mare that I had ridden for a friend last summer. She was given to us a couple weeks ago because she was not being used where she was and our friend thought she would be good for me since the mare and I got along so well last summer. She is doing great and most of her extra weight has come off. the other horses are doing well as our pasture is growing good and everyone gets to graze during the day.

My job is going good. its very very exhausting but I'm getting use to it. Juggling work and home is still somewhat of a struggle. but the extra income makes it worth it.

I will try and get some pictures posted later of all the critters

Quote: If you are just wanting pets you can use the White boy, the next gen will have more Silkied feathers but he will throw a wonky comb to his kids. Your four girls are good enough if you got a different roo you could actually breed to show quality(may take several gens but it can be done). If you want to just use them as incubators and buy fertile eggs they will be a great flock. This is my suggestion if you want to breed. Pair your Black/Blue and Splash under a Blue rooster. Put the Partridge and Buff under a Buff, Porcelain, or Partridge rooster. You could also just put all four under a Blue boy and will get some interesting Partridge colors from the PT and Buff girls. There is no telling what colors you will get if you use the White boy as White hides other colors, so it'll be a crap shoot on outcomes. There are lots of great Silkie breeders in WA. Catdance Silkies, KMHunter, Jennifer Vidmar(Utasol), Sheryl Buttler. If you are serious about breeding to Standard, I would get a Blue boy from one of them. I know many that have show and pet quality adults that throw great birds for offspring. It is work but worth it. You have a good base to start. I hope this helps. PM me if you need contact info.

How much? (I need; I may or may not be able to afford re: needing computer fixed or something).
