Thanks everyone for all the information on shows! Looks like there's one in October, and we will be going to the Puyallup and Jefferson Cty fairs. I'll remove Kitsap from the list, unless there will be one of those 'get togethers' going on.

After reading all the links, started wondering how many people actually join the clubs? And which ones? I contacted the ABA, just because I need to find a source to start a banty breeding program and I also need copies of the standards for the ones I end up breeding. (either OEGB or Dutch, either self-blue or porcelain. will depend on what I can find, looks like!)

So, who is part of what club, and do you feel like it's worth it to join for you? It's unlikely I will be showing in Chehalis or Yakima or wherever, for instance, as 2 small children at home don't make that kind of travel make much sense. Hard to justify for chickens at the moment.

I like being part of this thread, but as I've mentioned before, tea, barbeques, beach hangouts, etc. to talk with fellow chicken fanciers would be fabu. *That* would be the primary motivation - I have a lot to learn, and first-hand brain picking (notwithstanding any boogers) is more productive, to my mind...

I hope everyone has been ok in this heat. I saw the forecast for later this week and cannot wait for it to cool a little. Me thinking 80 degrees is nice says a lot. I'd prefer it much cooler.

Some of my birds didn't look to well on Friday with the temps, but today they all seemed to be doing fine. They got smart and stayed in the shade instead of running all over out in the sun.

Mama and the silkie babies are doing great. She keeps them in their coop or in the shade. It's hard to believe those little buggers are 4 weeks old already. I'm 90 percent sure on the sex of about half of them. There what I think is a little cuckoo girl in there that is so friendly and sweet. I really hope that more turn out to be girls because I'd like to keep her. Her head feathers are in enough that I could see the stripes really well tonight.

This EE has been an awesome mom to them. I put a black leg band on her to mark her as a good broody. She can raise chicks any time she wants. I still can't get over her taking the 3 week old in when she had all the 3 day olds. Just put it next to her in the daytime and she was fine.

The four silkie hens are still sitting on their 6 eggs. They steal the eggs from each other when they get up for food. My blue hen hasn't gone broody before. She plucked her belly and pancakes herself better than any of the others. She's also very good on making sure the eggs are under her. I can't wait to see how she takes care of the chicks.

Do you think I could safely put chicks outside in their brooder with no light on? Its going to be close to 100 today

Yes. just watch the chicks. If they huddle together, they might be cold. If they spread their wings out and lay down flat, then they are a bit too warm. My husband purchased a laser gun, thermometer and blasted each chick periodically to see what temp they each were at. I think he bought it at harbor freight. Also check with o'Reilly auto parts. This worked out fantastically!

Hinotori: I agree about the heat, luckily my girls have plenty of shade, but it's still awfully warm when there's no breeze. We finally gave it up last night and slept in the trailer. It has AC so we could at least cool it off enough to get to sleep. The rest of the night was fine with just windows opened.

Your EE sounds like a terrific momma, that must be so much fun to watch. I swear, if one of my girls goes broody I'm going to get eggs just to get to watch the family time! And your little blue silky sounds so cute! Such good mommas!!!

That's what worries me; I suspect I'll need to spend a lot of leash-time with him this week (because as old and slow as he is, he's just fast enough that I can't catch him) and probably also a few car rises with the AC on when Franklin's home Thursday and Friday.
