Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

hello!
I'm Jeff, live in Lynnwood, WA, and my wife Kim (KimK). she should be making an appearance here soon.
We don't have chickens (yet!) but we're actively looking for a gentleman's farm in the area to move to. Then a coop, then some chicks, then...(we know, it never ends!)
We'll be watching, reading, and hopefully, getting to know you as we soak up all of the great information on this forum.

We could also use some pointers to get started - anyone nearby willing to show us around their coop/flock?
See you around!

Hi Jeff and Welcome Aboard!

There are several people in the Lynnwood area so stay tuned. I believe that inside the city limits chickens are not allowed, so check on that while you're looking for property. I know folks were trying to get it changed, so my info may be old. Neighborhood assoc. sometimes have even more stringent rules, so just be aware.

If you haven't seen it already, there's a thread for coop & run design and building, it's a great resource. The thing that, far too often, gets overlooked is predator proofing your coop and run. Racoons are everywhere and can be one of your biggest problems in suburban areas, along with dogs. Spare yourself a lot of grief and plan for them. Remember.... chicken wire is only good for keeping chickens in, not keeping predators out.

There are lots of good people here so stick around and get acquainted. Oh... there are 2 poultry shows coming up.... Vancouver WA fairgrounds on the 19th and another in Chehalis in Nov. They are free and very entertaining. It's a great opportunity to check out a lot of breeds, talk to breeders, and meet some BYC folks in person.

Hey what have you 2 been up too? I had 10 chickens killed in the pen behind my garage. I WAS DEVISTATED!!!!!!! I cried fot days. Im now getting eggs. I dont know if it was coons, or coyotes, I got a have a heart trap cought 3 cats,(MINE too) and 2 chickens MINE!!!! LOLOL The remaining 6 are in with my originals. They get out everyday now. Im not using the pen on the back of the garage at this time. My son and I bought a 1 year old angus steer. But I need an electric fence charger, before I can bring him home. Hey everyone! I've got to get rid of 3 roosters and I have put them up on craigslist, but I thought I should at least give them the chance to not be immediately eaten and have a happy life with a flock somewhere. I have 2 brothers, one frizzle and one not, both easter egger/bcm mix (olive eggers i think?). They are both 2 months old. I also have a 3 month old Dorking rooster. He is not crowing yet and relatively friendly, not aggressive at all. Let me know if you have a home for any of them. I live in Seattle and I'm willing to deliver them a reasonable distance if they are going to a good home. Please send me a message if interested!

Sorry to hear about the losses. Cats will kill chickens, but 10 all at once sounds like dog/coyote/coon... What are you using for bait? Tuna worked well for us in the past.
We have a fence to keep dogs out (wouldn't keep coyote out, need a 7ft fence) then the coops are solid wood and if we're gone for the day they are kept in the runs, which have clear roofing over chicken wire and the sides are 1/4" hardware cloth over chicken wire. Then the bottom has 2*3 rabbit fence for 2 ft outside and inside to keep a larger predator from digging in. I would prefer to dig the hardware cloth straight down for a foot or 2 also, but we couldn't due to rocks and things. We've lost chickens to racoons and to feral cats before. Trying to keep it from happening ever again.

Thanks. We're actually looking for a place in the Snohomish area. We now live in unincorporated Snohomish county, so Lynnwood city rules don't apply (except for the 25' from the property line rule, which would put the coop INSIDE our current house).

The poultry shows sound great, but quite a drive away. We'll see if we can make it.
