Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

Yea... I started the name tag last year and now it's just sort of a joke.... but sometimes it helps. :) Next time definitely say hello. And with my swiss cheese memory you'll have to remind me of where we "met".

Just checking if anyone in the Pierce county area might have some hatching eggs to sell. I am looking for Araucanas or Faverolles. I have two broody hens that have been sitting for the last week. Most of my birds are raising babies so I have no eggs. Just PM me if you have some. Thank you.

Hi folks,
Last year at this time I started compiling Scentsy buddies, I was able to donate 18 of them to the Mary Bridge Children's Hospital. A place near and dear to my heart since both of my boys spent quite a bit time in the NICU there.

If you would like to know more on how to provide a donation (I dont want to spam the page

), message me and I will give the info you are looking for.

Thanks,
Shannon

On another note the chickens are good, Im only getting one egg right now since the other hen is in molt. I cannot wait until these chicks start laying....hoping for sometime around Christmas! I still have my little rooster he and his daddy get along fine, in fact all of the chickens seem to be mingling together nicely.

Hope everyone is doing well.

I have been looking over my chicks and it looks like the chick I thought was a Silkie Orpington cross (we are calling it Silkington) is actually one of my Sizzle chicks. I had labeled the eggs but not the chicks since I expected curly feathers but this could be a smooth feathered Sizzle since it is bantam sized (I assume a large fowl cross would be bigger). I have a frizzle feathered Sizzle but then it looks like I also have some smooth feathered Sizzles. It is a beautiful chick, just not what I expected.

I have never been to a bird show before and a woman who bought breeding pairs of Australian Spotted ducks from me has asked if I will bring ducks to this show in order to promote the breed. I have some nice English Orpingtons I could try showing but I have no idea what that involves. My 13-year old daughter has asked me about showing but I don't know if there are any 4-H groups in our area or if she has time for weekly meetings with her busy schedule. Maybe I need to do some research to decide if we want to try going to a bird show.

Not every youth exhibitor has to be in 4H, it makes it easier, but we did have a few "open youth" that showed when I was a kid. We also had some youth (myself among them) that often showed their birds in open class for better competition, there is nothing to prevent that either. So she has options. A knowledgeable 4-H leader can help learn, and the organization as a whole is a good one, but honestly I've seen lots of bad leaders really good youth back as well.

Hmm. My understanding was that "bantam" genetics were dominant? Matt? And where would you find out whether a smooth feathered Sizzle is possible? For MOI... curious.

I saw pictures of smooth feathered Sizzles online when I looked it up, wondering if this chick was actually one of my Sizzles. I have only hatched one in the past when I bought Silkie eggs from someone and it had the curly feathers so that was shat I expected. The person who bought it loved it but it turned out to be a rooster so now she wants me to raise them and sell her pullets. I don't know if she wants smooth Sizzles or not but I don't need to keep any beyond the age when I can sex them. I don't have the space for too many projects so I need to be able to keep all my bantams together.

My older daughter was in 4-H when we lived in Ellensburg because it was big there. I have a friend in Gig Harbor who has daughters in 4-H there and they showed chickens at the fair. I have no experience selling chickens because in the past I have only had Easter Egger chickens for eggs and to raise chicks for replacements. This is the first time I have raised anything worthy of being shown and my younger daughter has always loved birds so she would enjoy showing more than me. The benefit of 4-H is that they know how to show while I do not. If I make the effort to have her show, I would want her to do well because she is quite competitive. My older daughter never cared how she placed, she got excited about getting ribbons no matter what color they were. It was only luck when she won.

Hi Washington Peeps! I have a huge question (to me) for you all. I would like to start showing my Barnevelders in the upcoming WFF show in Chehalis next month. I have never showed before and I heard that my birds have to be tested to be shown...who do I call for testing? I know nothing about it. I hatched these eggs this summer and would love to test the quality of my stock in a show...but I know nothing about testing, leg banding, etc...can anyone help me out? I'm really a newby and don't have any friends that show poultry...

Thanks in advance!

DD

Should have answers for all your NPIP questions. If you're not from a tested flock you're subject to have birds tested at show.

You'll find all the show catalog and info there.

Birds must be leg banded, you can find them from numerous suppliers on-line, you'll want "numbered poultry bandettes" Same size they'd recommend for Rhode Island Reds or Plymouth Rocks I'd imagine would fit your Barnvelders. Which I think is size 11 or 12, been a while since I bought any.
