Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

Do you have  a FB chicken group in your area? That might help to try and meet up with people.  I have a group I belong to for Whatcom Co . We have so much fun. I learn so much from the group & once a month we have a meet and greet in different areas around Whatcom so everyone has a chance to come.

Ohh. I hadn't thought of that! I will definitely look into it. Thanks

Just wanted to pop in and say Happy Mother's day to all the Mom's out there!

Looks like our turkeys hatched two chickens. The hen is still sitting on a nest full of mixed eggs. When they peep she lays down to protect and warm them. The tom is keeping all other birds at a distance.

Last year I had Beltsvilles & the tom fell in serious lust with a white Muscovie & almost killed her standing on her back...ripped the hair off her head trying to mate...Crazy birds !

What a great Mom Day present!

This little fuzz ball's an Austra-Orp. The home grown eggs all have a daddy that's an Orpington. Mamas could be australorp, orpington, or brahma. There's one Br-Orp that hatched today too. We're still waiting on five more home grown eggs, and the Jersey Giants we got from Chickielady!

For Mother's Day I got clean chicken coops but then yard waste pick-up is tomorrow so today is coop cleaning day anyway! We no longer compost the shavings from the coops because they take too long to break down and I don't have compost bins that turn.

I moved my Easter Eggers out of the Orpington coop so they no longer get to free range with them. The two roosters I have now are doing a great job covering the hens but they are just too heavy for the standard sized hens. I was also curious if my pullets were laying yet and I discovered that they are laying beige colored eggs that I probably have in my incubators with the Orpington eggs so I will have mixed chicks. I am hoping it will be obvious which ones are mixed, otherwise they will all have to be called "barnyard mix" and taken to the auction because I don't want to raise cross breeds.

My three from Del's lay beautiful blue and green eggs but the ones I bought as chicks from a breeder are the ones laying the beige eggs. I may just sell all my Easter Eggers because I am getting so many hatching eggs that we have plenty of eating eggs without having chickens just for eating eggs. The Easter Eggers have always been my favorite (the feed stores called them Aracaunas before the breed standard was written but we called them Easter Egg chickens back then due to the colorful eggs) so I may keep a few of my favorites but the beige egg layers have to go because their eggs look too much like my Orpington eggs. It looks like I will have to systematically lock up each hen to see what color egg she lays so I can decide which ones to sell and which ones to keep, if I keep any of them.
