Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

Genius idea.... probably better than a trip to the freezer too.... (No, I wouldn't do that !!!).....
It is easy...I have a cage ready all the time, and a 2x4 strung across a corner of the pen about 4 feet off the ground, and in the cage she goes, and she can SEE all her friends on the ground, and misses the treats & all the fun, and more than likely feels humiliated on top of it all...doesn't take long til she wants out of the cage !

It is 55 degrees here !
We are almost ready to turn on the heater, LOL

Pics of the salt flat Flood Plains across the street, I took these while standing at the end of our driveway.

See the river at a medium tide in the background...at a King tide, the river creeps right over to the end of our driveway..

Sun was shining at me, so not the best photos.
I intend to oil paint these...but the better is to take the photos in the morning when the sun is behind me, shows off all the wildflower colors much better.
Still, it is so beautiful I thought I'd share !

Hi all

Been a bit since I posted. You guys have all been such great help to me with my hatching issues, Knowing my luck I will still need ALOT more LOL. I just put 7 Japenese Quail eggs into lockdown so I figured IF they hatch I would need something to feed them (since nothing has hatched I haven't bought the feed). I have my fingers crossed hatch or no.

Well I went out to Bradley Farms to get the feed and they had a broiler sale going on, They have tons of Turkey and Broiler Chicks, Well I bought my Son 4 broilers and he is so loving it. I explained to him what they were and I think he understood because he asked if one was going to be his chicken nuggets! The Farm is going to have a Processing weekend in September and they are going to walk me through the process.

Next weekend our Barnyard beauties goes into lockdown. so excited about that.

Does anyone know the best place to get the Mareks vaccine?
Thank you all

Karen

What's a broody buster and what are other ways to break that cycle? I will never have a rooster, so I dread this phase when it comes.

There are several variations on the theme. I use a standard wire dog kennel, take out the tray and put a piece of 1/2" hardware cloth on the floor. I don't have a place to hang it so I put some concrete blocks underneath to allow plenty of airflow. The hen goes in with food and water and stays in there for 3 days. Make sure she's safe from predators. Some will put them in a barn, shed, or garage. Mine goes into the secure pen. After 3 days let her out and watch. If she goes to the nest box to do anything other than lay an egg put her back into the kennel for another 1, 2, or 3 days. I've never had to go more than 3 days but my experience is limited. It takes them a week or three to start laying again, usually.

Some people have rabbit cages and those seem to work well, too. I've done the dunking, it's a lot of bother and doesn't really work for me. On a hot day like we're having now, they'd probably love it! :)

Has anyone found fertile eggs in any grocery stores in the Snohomish county area? I read on one of the threads that some people have successfully incubated grocery store eggs, namely trader joes eggs. However, I have not been able to find any.

You could try craigslist. I got a dozen fertile eggs from a lady in North Bend for not that much money. I'm sure there are people closer to you that have fertile eggs. Good luck!

I took a much simpler route. I am going on vacation in a weeks and my Rhodebar had been broody for several weeks. I decided to try moving her from the nest to the perch at night. Two nights I moved her after dark and done. She is not broody anymore! Some times that's all it takes.

I found a companion for my Pekin hen and, although I would have preferred getting her a hen, she seems happy with the drake and he is obviously happy with her. In the process of looking for an adult companion, I ended up getting Pekin ducklings as well. I have more than I can keep now so I will have breeding pairs once the youngest ducklings mature. The older ducklings are fully feathered already so they were easy to voice sex (and band for easy identification) while the younger ducklings will need to be vent sexed so I know how many of them will pair up and how many extra hens I can keep once I am able to find homes for the drakes. I know they are meat birds and it is fine if someone wants to raise their own meat but I would prefer these drakes live long happy lives with unrelated hens. I put the young drakes in the yard with the chickens and bantam ducks for now because I don't think they will try breeding with anything yet but I will need to watch them as they settle in with their sisters here.
