Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

This morning at 7:45 I thought the hens were making more noise than usual. I looked out the kitchen window and thought, "Oh, a little deer is in the horse pasture." Nope! It was a coyote. It was walking 150 feet behind the barn where the pasture drops down a steep hill. By the time I got my shoes on and went outside it was already headed down the hill. I managed to get one shot off but it was headed into the woods. I know it will be back. All chickens and cats are accounted for this time. I wish we could get one of them to make an example for the rest of the pack. A couple of weeks ago they killed a deer in our horse shelter. Yuck!

Dies anyone in Washington have some Ancona duck eggs for sale or trade? I'd really like to trade for some. I home school my children and my oldest has been pushing and pushing for us to hatch ANYTHING as part of our summer science fun. I've been putting it off (since we had to move.)

ok i need some help here. I am not successfully completed a hatch so i am going to ask. I went in to turn them (day 17) their was an awful odor. so i first checked the cracked eggs that i had waxed....BINGO!. they had not exploded thankfully. i then smelled every one and they smelled fine. but every time i open the bator to turn them their is an odor. I go into lockdown Late tonight early tomorrow.

What should i do about the odor?

there is no mess in the bottom it is still all clean. if these babies hatch i dont want them to get sick or anything from the smell. I have it up on a tall cooling rack and all vents open. should the smell go away?

Thanks

When you go into lockdown or right before, I'd go ahead and take all the eggs out - gently put them in a cooler or wrap them in a blanket so they don't cool down too much - and quickly clean the incubator. No more than a wipe down and maybe five minutes. Then put the eggs back.

That's me, though, and I have an incubator that heats up pretty quickly.

If that makes you uncomfortable then I think just leaving them in without cleaning the incubator is OK. But I'm still pretty new to this incubator thing, so others with more experience might have better advice.

Does anyone know where I can find some bantam pullets that have not yet begun laying around the Seattle area? I've been looking on craigslist, but it seems like all of the listings are either on the far west or far east of Washington..

One of my young roosters(BR) is harassing one of my layers who just started laying so it's time to get rid of him and the other RIR rooster. I'm hoping to be able to trade them for a laying hen who just started or something since I now only would be left with three girls total(lost one girl and now getting rid of two boys)

I don't know about your area, and I don't want to be negative, but here... Not many people looking for Roosters, many purebreds are given way. Hoping you have good luck with your trade.

There is a guy in Kent that often advertises on Craigslist. He'll trade roosters for a pullet. Last time I saw his ad he has RIR and EE hens I think.
