Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

Hi Dave, I've read about the black cherry juice, too. My mom (94) has had gout for about the past 6 years. She tried the cherry but it didn't help her. Now she has an anti-gout medicine with no dietary restrictions to speak of, which is good because the assisted living folks don't do much in the way of healthy menus (a whole other subject). She hasn't had a flair up in the past 2 years (fingers crossed). I'd be interested in what you experience since I have a bit of arthritis in my wrists.

Carolyn..... Arthritis in my wrist.... Well, between the copper bracelet and the black cherry juice, the pain has subsided about 90%.... I take it with Vodka... about 1 tsp. BCJ over ice and a splash....

Soooo. I don't' know which is the main pain reliever.... You will have to try them all.... I'm not changing my routine.... HAHAHAHAHAHA

... It's so nice to not be in continual pain...

Seeking Advice!!! I've been anxiously awaiting my first eggs from my 9 pullets thinking I was getting close as my roo was getting quite feisty with the girls (still seeking a new home for him!!). Sunday, finally found 4 eggs, 2 were broken as they were laid in a old coop without proper bedding (no one laid In the nests I had ready). My barred rock was very upset when I took the eggs away. Then, Monday, I went out several times to check and found the barred rock hiding and eating an egg!! Again today, it looks as if an egg was laid (again in old coop that was now prepared) but no sign of an egg!! What can I do with an egg eater?!?! Such a bummer!! I did find one egg hidden today and it was pretty large (which just tells me that this must have been going on for a little while)!! :(

I have read several threads about egg eaters. Some suggest putting a golf ball or ceramic nesting egg in the nest. The thought behind it is they peck but don't get any food so eventually stop. You could rig up (or buy but they are expensive) nesting boxes that have the egg roll into a box that the hens cannot get to. Maybe add some extra protein to their diet and see if that helps, if it does then my thought would be they are not getting enough protein in their current diet. My understanding is when they eat eggs they leave a huge mess behind of shell and smell. If you are not finding that I would wonder if you have a predator around who has figured out how to get at your eggs.

To my knowledge I don't have any egg eaters but they successfully hid a nest with 12 eggs in it from me for a week or so. Lola (sneaky girl) showed the other girls her favorite hiding place and they (not sure how many) are now laying in the shed! We clipped wings to keep them in the back run area for now (we have killer turkeys).

Today they were back to laying in the shed. They built a new nest in there

Agree to assess your feed….make sure you have oyster shell, grit and extra protein free choice and see what happens…..there are those birds that just eat eggs but most of the time it points out to not enough feed or the right stuff. I feed both cooked and crushed and raw eggs to my birds and have not found that it causes them to become egg eaters.

Thanks so much Ranier, I appreciate your reply!! I do know who my culprit is because I caught her eating the egg....although she left Very little evidence behind...not even a tiny bit of shell. I will definitely add more protein, I think there feed has 18% but the have just switched to layer from chick blend. I wish I had the flexibility to check for eggs more frequently but while at work I'm stuck....though I have been toying with the idea of a camera. I will try more of your ideas, and let you know! Again, thanks for your help! I've never had an egg eater!!

Any one I can talk to about my poor little hen it seams like she's just running out of energy, stands in the yard untill I put her back in the coop ,has runny poop.will go eat scratch .
My hen acted like this when she was egg bound. I gave her a 500 mg calcium tablet ground up in some scrambled eggs and bread. She laid a broken egg about 3 hours later. She was still very sick for about a week and I feared she might have peritonitis. However, she survived and started laying again about a month later. It was a slow process but she made a full recovery eventually. She laid 25 eggs in August (and she is at least 3 years old now). Good luck with your hen. Keep us posted on how she is doing. :)

I agree with ochochicas. There are some really good threads on hens that are egg bound.
