Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

Hi!

I'm new here and new to chickens...or will soon be new to chickens. I'm in Kitsap County in the Bremerton area. I have a coop ready and am waiting for a contractor to give me a quote on a run for my yard. I'm slowly piecing everything together so I'll be ready for some chickens! I'm leaning toward the Orpingtons just because, from my research, they make a really good 'pet' flock and that's my main interest. Maaaybe try showing at some point.

I do hope to buy local and am willing to drive a little ways to get them! Well, when I'm ready for them.

Emsanon,

Hello and welcome! I highly recommend getting a book entitled The Chicken Encyclopedia. It's been a tremendous help to me and very informative.

If you'd like to check it out, here is a link: http://www.amazon.com/Chicken-Encyc...4511&sr=1-1&keywords=the+chicken+encyclopedia

I'm a new chicken owner myself (only 4 - they are so sweet), and have found the people here friendly and willing to offer some helpful advice. Congratulations on your new chicken brood, and God bless you!

The Purple Coop

I hatch blue, black and splash English Orpingtons but I just took a break from hatching so I have stacks of eggs and empty incubators. I have been raising a bunch of chicks so they are finally old enough to separate the cockerels and pullets. The older ones are out of a different rooster than I am using now so I need to pick the ones I want to keep and then sell the rest. I am considering taking the cockerels to the auction so I don't have to hassle with selling them. I have Silkie roosters that will probably go to the auction too. As much as I would love for the roosters to have homes, they will most likely be eaten so I might as well part with them instead of putting too much feed in them.

I am going to need to cut back on chickens since we are leasing horses that will take time and money away from the chickens. I keep considering selling my entire flock but then I reconsider because I enjoy hatching and raising chicks. I would not give up the ducks but I could probably live without chickens. I am already down to my nicest English Orpington hens and my rooster is exceptional but I could probably part with two black hens since I like the blue and splash best. I have been working on improving my Silkies to get show quality and I have been hatching frizzled Cochins and Sizzles but I am considering selling all, or at least most, of my bantams so I can focus on other things.

Oh I am in love with my Cochins! I have two bantam frizzles and along with Orpingtons, want to focus on Cochins. I'll send you a PM!

There is a fella in Covington area that has a variety of rare breeds, love my girls from him. But he sells strictly on Craiglist.
Also berrytanglefarm.com is in your neck of the woods & I love my Hedemora & Orpingtons I got from them. Waiting for the most recent batch to hatch from there right now....I may need to rehome a few if this hatch is as good as the last one! Have some Partridge, Red and Cuckcoo Orps cooking up now.

That's cool! I'll see if I can find them too! I soooo can't wait until I can finally get some. I just need to wait for the run to be built so I know that when the chicks have grown, they will have a safe place to go.
