One of the silkie hens went broody today. She never jokes about it, so I set up the incubator so I can put eggs in it and under her at the same time. So should have more silkie chicks in a few weeks.

does any one have a good feed recipe? I was thinking that possibly 2/5 wheat 1/5 rolled corn 2/5 oats might be good. I don't think that barley is good for layers but do layers do well on oats?

Any input is welcome!

So my showgirl crowed this am, leaving me to two roos and two pullets... if anyone is interested in a black silkie roo with some color leakage let me know! He's right around 19 weeks, I just can't keep 2 in my tiny flock and love the showgirl more

Layers need a complete diet specifically designed for layers.... I use Purina Layena and have separate feeders for Granite Grit, roasted egg shells and oyster shells.... From the first egg they laid, the shells were perfect and the eggs perfect.... I could be lucky... I like being lucky....

been meaning to build some like that for a while. With the feed what I'm trying to do is get it lower than 25 cents a #.

(that's the amount we're paying right now) although it is still a better price then layena at 35 cents a #.

When I took my chickens off Layena and switched to a slightly cheaper feed they all but quit laying. As soon as that bag was gone I went back to Layena and they were all laying normally within five days. I don't think I'll switch feeds again in order to try to save a little money. The hens seem happy with it.

What we are currently doing is feeding them 1/3 wheat at 12 cents a #, 1/3 livestock feed at 28 cents a #, and 1/3 layena at 35 cents a # .
