Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

I've been using Scratch n Peck brand feeds for all my girls' life stages and was becoming increasingly frustrated with all the powder leftover. Quick search on here showed I wasn't the only one.

Apparently that powder is a very important vitamin & mineral mix. My girls are laying like crazy and seem chunky and healthy, but general consensus was that it's best served moistened or better yet, fermented. So I fermented some...

After waking up to a huge mess in the kitchen (I THOUGHT my containers were big enough) I shuffled some bowls out to the ladies. They LOVED it! It was a bit like a toddler eating spaghetti unassisted for the first time, but they were practically licking the bowls clean!

Guess I need to put away the awesome no waste bucket feeder I made.

How do you make Fermented feed?

So I basically put feed in a tall bucket or glass crock and then fill with enough water to have about 1.5-2" of water above the feed. Then loosely cover it and stir now and then or when I remember.
This blog has pretty straightforward directions.

I hadn't fermented in a while as my first batch of chicks refused to eat it and made a mess. This batch loves it though! And once they got the hang of it, it wasn't messy.

That's it; I don't add anything but water, and stir now and then. I usually wait 2-3 days before serving it and just add dry feed and water back into the main bucket as I take it out. So it's like a never ending bucket!

Well phooey. I've got my fingers crossed for the other two!
Confession: I'm a bit of a hatch-a-holic myself. :D
I am so excited about it :) this is my first chicken hatch I hatched some quail eggs about a year ago well I assisted as friend did (with a homemade incubator also that one was out of a coleman cooler) ...and this is my first incubator I made it's doing great job so far :)
