I had the same thoughts about the government BUT as I ship eggs and birds all over the country on a weekly basis I needed to get certified to do so legally. If I didn't ship I likely wouldn't have bothered with it.

Here's another link that you might find helpful: http://agr.wa.gov/FoodAnimal/AvianHealth/AvianNPIP.aspx :)

haha glad to know wasnt only one with such thoughts... but thats my thinking I just want to learn more and get understanding thru ppls experiences... and what information on it.. I can see the good points n bad points...now just to think how involved or uninvolved I might want to be or where I may or may go further with this..have lots of questions regarding it such as can they just drop by anytime to test out of the blue do I turn over any of my rights by agreeing to become part of the program ect ect ect ect it's governmental there is always fine print involved and a million hoops.......

National Poultry Improvement Plan

My understanding is that it is a national program designed to monitor and eliminate disease in poultry.

"The National Poultry Improvement Plan was established in the early 1930's to provide a cooperative industry, state, and federal program through which new diagnostic technology can be effectively applied to the improvement of poultry and poultry products throughout the country."

Very important to note that NPIP only cares about Pullorum, and hopefully AI since its a free test in WA but not required. Some states do not test for AI and only for Pullorum nation wide. Despite what many think it is not anything to protect against most diseases. There are many NPIP certified flocks I would never deal with due to disease and management concerns. It seems online though that many people think it's protection against everything which is most certainly not the case.

@MargaretYakoda thought you might like a lil update, ..also wanted to thank you again these lil marshmellow balls have been such a joy and learning experience ...they have even captured my sons and my other halfs attentions and brought them a lil more over to the chicken side :) mark was sitting on the floor last night handling and playing with the chicks...
