Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

Gee... after I wrote the post above I saw SEVERAL other new people!

Hello

and Welcome to everyone! Spring always seems to bring a batch of new members along with the new chics. Both are equally fun I think.

It's interesting see what everyone chooses to feed their chickens. There's such an array of choices. I typically get Purina Layena or Flock Raiser and find that Wilco puts it on sale every now and then. A 40# bag of Layena is $11 right now. Flock Raiser and Start & Grow are larger bags - 50 # - for $15. I can save about $3 per bag when they do that. If anyone wants to stock up when the prices are good, remember you can freeze feed just like any other food. To make it more manageable you can put it into smaller containers to fit in better, too.

X-Cel feed is also available directly from the mill in Tacoma at a slightly lower price. I've never gotten there during business hours but I know others do. I've heard differing opinions about it, just like everything else.

Layena 50# is $19.99 no matter where I go around here. I 'm just about out so I think I'll have to head to the feed store today.

I tried Nutrena and my hens practically quit laying all together. Not sure if it was the food or just a coincidence, but I'm not taking the risk again.

I get 40# for $13.99 that's $.34975 a # while yours is $.3998 a # thats is a $.05005 a # diference!!!!
Your suppliers must be really making a profit!!!

I fed my gang scratch n peck for a couple of years. It is a combo of whole grains and fine powders. I found that my clucks were picking out the parts that they liked and spreading the rest around. I was shoveling the fine stuff into the compost pile. Some people mix the powder with yogurt or ferment it to get them to eat it but mine were mixing it all in with the bedding and poop making it difficult to contain. And I have to say, my chickens were looking lean and some were missing a lot of feathers. I switched around trying to find a pellet that I liked, organic and not organic. I finally settled on Nutrena feather fixer that I supplement with calcium. My chickens look healthier. All my bald chickens grew their feathers back, my cream legbar eggs are blue (not green or white like they were on some of the other feeds). I know its not organic but then my family doesn't always eat organic and my feed store sells it for about $16.00 and I was paying nearly $30.00 for organic that was being half wasted.

Conway feed has an organic pelleted feed. They are local. X-cel feed is also a good northwest feed. First Fruit carries it in Redmond.

If I wasn't forced to multi task all the time, I might try scratch n peck again. In smaller amounts and wetting it so they couldn't spread it. Right now I need to be able to feed them at 5AM and leave for the rest of the day and not worry about what they are doing with their food.
its taken awhile to do the fermented mix with the scratch and peck, but the fines are the vits and minerals and other good stuff that is included in the seeds, with it mixed they now eat it all…...

I am looking for a home for a pair of pilgrim and a pair of african geese. the african female will follow me around and jump in my lap. She loves being carried and pet. My mom wants to take them to auction saturday if i cant find a home for them.

Welcome to the group JennysHens.  Tell us about your flock.

Thank you! I have 3 black Australorp chicks that are 9 days old, 2 lineolated parakeets, and a severe macaw composing the feathered flock and will be adding a white bellied caique next year. I also have two rescued cats, a lab mix pup, and two Kenyan sand boas. So it's a full house! :giggle:
