Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

So apparently I am running a rescue center... I acquired silkies today and need to rehome them. They aren't my kind of birds but I will hold them until I can find them a good place.

Backstory.

There was a coop fire near me yesterday and we won't get into coops and heat lamps, but all 3 chickens made it out. They caught 2 but 1 is hiding. They say they will bring it to me when they find it. The 2 I have were in terrible shape.

These are the Spurs off the rooster

I have spent hours clipping, cleaning and checking over these 2. They are all cleaned up but are a little shook up understandably. I don't know they're ages.

Poor babies! You're so terribly kind for taking them in. I wish them future health and a great home.

I really wanted to hatch our first eggs under a broody hen. One of our Favs went broody once in the fall and once in the winter, but we weren't ready yet so we did the breaker-box routine (worked great).

Now that it's time, she doesn't seem interested.

Trying very hard not to take advantage of a friend reminding me that she has an incubator that she would loan me.

So very tempting...

Something that i learned is that often as broodies sit on their eggs others will sometimes continue to lay in the same box….but when the eggs begin to hatch, the broodie will only stay with the eggs for the first ones that hatch so after about 2-3 days the rest will die once she is off the nest with the wandering chicks looking for food…..So if you see this happening, move the eggs to an incubator even if they are cold, if viable, some should still hatch. Best of Luck….eliz

So, I got off my dead a@@ and dug out the big incubator, dusted it off, and had Einstein help me dolly it out & into the cabin and set it up, water in the bucket, set the tray, all clean inside & plugged it in & within 20 min it was humming along rock steady at 99. and now, I am in big trouble, cuz this thing can easily deal with 350 chicken eggs........................
I am only gonna do a few dozen !

Lord help me !

No one wants this poor rooster. Everyone wants the hens only! I currently have 13 roosters I REALLY don't want more! 7 are awaiting freezer camp, 4 are my daughters bantam Cochins and 2 are my main boys.

No rooster room here. I have still three silkies who have a date with a crock pot. The other silkie boys need to grow some more first so I can decide who to keep.

It's early. As Spring really arrives, she'll probably get interested again.:fl

Hi all,

I just found this thread (due to not being on a whole lot of "lists") as there is so much more to do in life, especially with a sick husband. Someone recommended this as a good place to ask about where to find different chicken breed "breeders".

So... that is mainly why I am here. I really need to find a good quality Cream Legbar hen. One of my young hens/pullets is laying pink eggs and I need to replace her. I only have four hens and I have no intentions of keeping this hen for chick raising. Anyone know of a breeder who is breeding the lighter cream Cream Legbars?

To top it all off, one of my Partridge Penedesencas, also a pullet, started laying olive eggs instead of the normal chocolate color. Grrrr.... She is officially for sale!

Yes, I live in Washinton... on the great Olympic Peninsula, where a winter windstorm took out my chicken coop. Luckily, no chickens were harmed. They were still sitting on their perchs, with an 18" diameter tree laying within a very few feet of the edge of the roost. I caught all but one by picking them up one by one and stuffing them into a dog crate. It took me two days to catch that last one as I could not find where she was hiding. Then on Sunday, there she was... near my feet and the race was on. Now, just imagine a 70+ year old lady, short grey hair in a wizard style from just getting up, in her nightgown with a purple fuzzy coat over it, and rubber barn boots, wielding a trout net, running after a stressed hen who did not want to be caught. Yep.... should be a cartoon, huh?
I look forward to sharing information and fun times with everyone....
