Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

I would love half Hammies and some Penedesencas... but can only find roos for sale. Major bummer. Oh well, somethi.g to lust for NEXT year... Right? Lol

Hi... I have a small flock of Partridge Penedesencas and will be setting eggs very soon if you are interested. They have just really started laying well. If you know of a Partridge Penedesenca rooster, I could use another one. I ordered 2 roos and 5 hens. One roo was white... so probably a partbred, and one of the hens is laying olive eggs. <sigh>

Meyer Hatchery has baby boys only. As far as hatcheries go, they do tend to be a BIT better than some. The feedstore in Aberdeen, Hometown Feed, will order onesies or whatever. They have a toll free number on their website. If you would like, I could see about grabbing you a few and add them to my order, can even hand raise the little devils for you (I work from home) so they will be sweet. But you MUST promise to come get the blokes before they start crowing! I live right on main street and roosters are prohibited! Lol

At the risk of upsetting the purists, especially as these are both rare breeds in need of good breeding, I rather wonder what one would get by crossing that white marked roo of yours with some Spangled Hamburgs. Pretty little chickens that lay an odd color egg? I admit, that is the only reason I want the Pens, they are small and lay a really great colored egg. Olive eggs would be fine too, just looking for a bit of variety! Lol

I went with the Hammies only because they won't sex banties. I want my chickens to be small and decent layers. The cuteness was the icing on the cake. I originally was looking at D'Uccles, but without sexing and an ordinance against roosters, that would be a no go. The Hammies were the smallest thing I could find that could be ordered hens only and lay pretty darn regularly! The fact that they are rather pretty, along with the promise of some fresh free eggs, has made my neighbors look forward to my having them running about and possibly escaping into their yards.

I am hoping that by raising them in the house with constant handling, and possibly ringing a bell at feeding time (as it will be seldom once grown, as I want themt forage!), I might be able to curtail a bit of their wild nature (that they seem to have a reputation for anyway).

I was actually quite worried about Hammies inherent "flightiness". Don't get me wrong, I know that all chichens really ARE individuals. This is not my first rodeo. But we always had comets or production reds or the sort. They were big, sweet, laid lots of eggs, and even the unfriendliest of the bunch could be described as "aloof", not skittish. And I do repeat that I know there are always exceptions to the rule, and this may just be an example of such, but this video made me decide to at least give those pretty little Hammies a try:

That sounds like a great idea. I could trade you a couple of my pullet chicks for them???? Would that work for you ? You can usually tell the pullets from the cockerels. That would give me some genetic diversity. Besides the 7 PP's I ordered, I bought a group of "dark brown egg layers from a gal in Rochester that included three PP hens, so with my ordered chicks, I now have a flock of 7 hens and one roo. My Avatar is one of the hens I bought in Rochester.

I promise! Besides, you will want to get the little girls so you can tame them down. It is a bit of a drive as I am near Port Townsend, but that would make a nice days outing.

Have you considered bantam Salmon Faverolles? I know a few people that have them and really enjoy their appearance, mild personalities, egg laying, and I believe they are auto-sexing at about 2 weeks. I haven't raised them so I don't have personal experience, I've just heard friends praising them.

I love the idea of showing birds, but not sure where we would even start!

You'd probably enjoy going to the Monroe Show. You'll see an amazing array of poultry including ducks, geese, turkeys, quail, etc. and get a feel for what goes on. Unlike rabbit shows or dog shows, the poultry stay in their cages until the judge takes one out to examine it. They judge it by the SOP and compare it to others in the breed, etc. to choose the "Best of" awards. They do divide the birds by age & sex, then by class, breed, variety. (I may not have this completely accurate since I don't show.) The exceptions to this are Seramas, they do "table top" judging. And 4H kids do a lot more with handling and such.

These shows also have a silent auction going throughout the day as a fund raiser for the club. Club members also bring eggs, chicks, birds, equipment, and crafts to sell. It's a big, open barn with lots of hustle and bustle. A fun day!
