Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

I used to live off of highway 512 on Portland Avenue. Cute little condo, but one of the crappiest places of town. I had a guy one time just walk into my place in the middle of the day and thought he lived there. He wouldn't leave! Of course my boyfriend was sitting on the couch and never got up to see who I was yelling at. I moved shortly after that and will never live around Tacoma again.

Regarding chickielady's smashed box with broken eggs...in my opinion it is not the responsibility of the seller to refund the money. The post office should be sending the refund. The seller did not ask for the box to be drop-kicked or run over by a forklift. Even if it had been double boxed, I bet the air cells are toast and there was a lot of scrambling going on in the eggs. I still wish you a good hatch though! It is a shame to waste perfectly good eggs due to someone's carelessness.

Fed Ex is not any better and UPS is definitely the worst. UPS will break your stuff and then REFUSE to pay you even though you bought the extra insurance. We've had Fed Ex deliver items to the wrong house on the wrong street that was not even in the neighborhood where we lived. When we called them, they told us to go find the packages and pick them up. Just bad customer service no matter who you use.

Years ago i did a job at the big hotel downtown Tacoma that had a Mary K convention,,,,,During the introduction, they mentioned to the audience to walk in groups when leaving because the neighborhood wasn't the best…( much better now)….I remember there was a crack house 2 blocks away…...

It's ok. I posted it more to see if anyone was online. I was thinking about chicken plans and was hoping someone would be on to yap to but no one was on Facebook.

Oh yeah. I forgot to mention that the woman I moved into this house with, who moved out without warning, tried to guilt trip me into letting her, her son with anger management and destructive behavior, and her boyfriend I've never met and don't know the name of move back in here. I told the landlord and she said to bad. So I've tried to be as nice as possible in telling her no but I'm pretty sure that I'm the bad guy and ungrateful and blah blah blah. I just finished fixing all the electrical sockets that her son damaged, replacing all the smoke alarms and patching the yard he chopped up with an ax. No, I'm not sorry....I want to be sorry but I'm not. I don't know how my landlord can be so trusting of people in their rentals. I mean I know I'll take care of the place but when I have my own rentals uhm no....

That's super frustrating! I haven't gotten eggs but I have received snakes in the mail. We only go through Fed Ex because of situations like this. To many dead snakes because the post office just doesn't care. In the future if I ever buy shipped eggs or chicks, I'll pay the extra to go through Fed Ex. I hope they survive.

Regarding dead snakes…..if the box wasn't in disarray, there are several air routes that routinely have dry ice and many hatcheries are refusing to send to some areas because of that….instant death. Cloverleaf lost some rare colored Faverolles a few years ago that was suspected of dry ice. of a handful of adults, only one survived when she received them…..heartbreaking.

Oh I TOTALLY want to move to a better neighborhood. But right now this is where I need to be. I live in Tacoma near the Emerald Queen Casino. I hate it here, mostly because I hate being in the city. Over the past few years I've lived between Graham, Buckley and Eatonville. I moved here because I needed a jump start, and I have it. In a few years we'll be working on buying our first house. By few years I mean sometime between now and when I die :plbb

So we are neighbors! I keep a couple guns. People will literally take things out of the backyard or out from under my house. :/ I've lost 2 lawnmowers, 3 weed whackers, 2 chairs, and a bike.

Snakes are shipped with their own heat source in their own boxes with their own padding. So they are probably shipped A LOT differently than chickens. But even then I don't plan to order hatching eggs anytime soon so who knows.

I don't have anything outside worth stealing. Everything gets brought into the house at night, or garage. Makes my house look super bare and empty right now but oh well.

Flockraiser for everyone. All Flock is only 18%. Sometimes if I can get a really good deal on the All Flock I'll get that mix half with Game Bird feed. I've been having issues so everyone that can eat it is getting a little bit of Calf Mana lately. They love the stuff so it's instead of scratch. I've tried lots of different foods and use what makes my flock healthiest and lay best. My egg customers don't care about organic. I'll never use the Scratch and Peck again though. Horrible issues with it and it's low protien. They did not want to eat the dust that is the protein and vitamins. I tried several ways to get them to do it. 4 months of that stuff and the egg production went down to 0. I just quit it and gave them some of my scratch mix (there is 14 different things in it) until I got back to the store, which apparently is better stuff because they started laying again after a few days. They were on Payback All Purpose (19%) for a while after that and came fully back to production. The Flockraiser just has done the best for my birds. Oystershell on the side.

I've really thought about fermenting feed. Bumps that nutrition. They do get Kefir occasionally. It's hilarious when they see that stuff. I didn't know chickens could actually lick bowls clean by scraping their beaks sideways .

I've been thinking about fermenting feed too. One of these days I'll get around to giving it a try. I mix the powder from the Scratch & Peck with plain yogurt and the girls gobble it up. My girls are just pullets, but they lay like crazy on the scratch and peck. I get 4 or 5 eggs every day from my five girls. I just hope that boosting the protein solves the feather picking problem.

Mine will pluck each other bare for the feathers on less than 20% protein. The easter eggers and ameraucanas are the worst for it. I'm not actually sure if any of the other breeds I have do it. I've only caught those doing it over the years. At least the purebred ameraucana hens don't have a thing for being clean shaven. Just the the EEs have that issue.
