Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

Sorry jbkirk. I haven't posted much since Marek's seems to be wiping out my pullets. I've been kind of bummed about it lately. It seems that some of them are resistant, but the more exotic breeds are dropping like flies. I'm going to hatch some more chicks and will be vaccinating all of them and hope to start over with new pullets. I had all these big plans to get some more rare breed birds, but now I'm not going to spend the money on eggs until I am sure we have this under control.

On another note, all the gardening has me a bit jealous so I haven't been commenting on it. We have deer and elk that frequent our yard and eat everything in site. One of our neighbors is putting up an 8 foot electric fence around their garden to keep the hoofed stock out. Seems like a lot of work to me for a few dollars in fresh vegetables. LOL No garden for me!
Sure it is Marek's ?
Not AI ?
AI is what has been going around, dropping birds like flies.
Very scarey, very contagious.

Marek's takes a while to kill, while the birds get more & more unsteady every day.

then last summer ILT was circulating....

Happy Easter to everyone~ and it is a sunny one here. No signs of rain... at least not right now.

For some reason, it seems like a more settled day here. Hubby has been home from Harborview for a week and two days now, so maybe things are settling down. He got smacked by the trunk of a fair size fir tree he was cutting down. Broken skull with 2 brain bleeds, broken neck (c/1), broken clavicle, broken spinus protrusions, and broken eye orbit. The only residual affects are unable to swallow without aspirating so he has a PEG tube and can not eat. He also has some minor memory loss. He is walking and very restless due to too much tv. He is a workaholic.

I set eggs shortly after he went into the hospital, and, they hatched before he came home. There are olive eggers (1 pullet) and Cream Legbars... and their might be one or two Penedesencas. They are about 11 days old now. My granddaughter was here and stayed during the hatching. I even know which one hatched first. She really had fun.

There is a fellow in our neighborhood who is selling organic locally grown grains. I've thought of sprouting some for my flocks. The price is good and they love the seed itself. (oats, barley, & wheat). I mix it along with their regular feed.

I'm late putting out my dogs so I better go get that done......

Again, have a great Easter Day!

Yes chickielady, it is Marek's. My birds were sent to the lab and confirmed to have Marek's. The hens are fine since it mainly affects only young birds. I'd already moved both my hatches from last fall out in the barn before I knew what hit them. I'm going to lose almost all my pullets from both hatches, in addition to one cockerel (so far).

What I have always wondered is, heat paks, like handwarmers & tor warmers.we use them in the bedding of shipped chicks.
They must be exposed to Oxygen to begin their chemical heat.so was wondering if they sucked the Oxygen outta the box, too ?

The heat packs we purchase to ship the snakes in are slightly different than the ones you buy for like a buck at Walmart for hand warmers or foot warmers. These ones are made to last 48 hours or longer. I typically buy the ones that last 72 just in case something happens and the snake doesn't make it their overnight. Snakes also can breathe very slowly so if there's a lack of oxygen I don't know if it would make a difference. I've yet to have a snake arrive dead, knock on wood. I haven't tried it with any other animal but a reptile.
