Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

Awe crap. I got flock raiser. They are currently 2 mos old. They seem fine, no noticeable issues. (Welsummer, CA Grey, Legbar) > Should I go back to chick starter or give layer crumble? Our crumble is 22% protein...............
Keep an eye out for Coccidiosis since Flock Raiser is not medicated.
It would be better if you had chick starter.
When babies are in transition, and are removed from medicated feed, they can sometimes get cocci ...so I would give them medicated feed o 1 week, and the next week back to your Flockraiser, (or unmedicated 17% crumbles)
Especially if they are outdoors.
I have found, when chicks are on medicated feed, their immunal systems do not get the chance to immunize against the cocci parasites.
The medication kills the parasite & the chicks immunal system never 'sees' it.
Often the swift removal from medicated feed, leaves them wide open for a coccidiosis infection.
If I alternate one week medicated chick feed, and one week off medication, I find the parasite is exposed to the immunal system & the immunal system thus has a chance to 'blueprint' the organisms & can now fight it.
Keep an eye out for signs of cocci.

Hi Fellow Washingtonians! I am in Woodinville and am fairly new to chickens and fowl. I kind of jumped in feet first and have really been enjoying it. I got Silkies and Modern Games, Purple Guineas, and Black East Indie Ducks. I have been working on a huge aviary for the chickens and the guineas(2). The ducks are living by themselves because I don't want the chickens getting wet. Anyhow, just wanted to introduce myself. Any other modern game bantam keepers in the area? I am loving these cute little birds!

I am not happy about this upcoming 'cold front' !
Just when I thought we were to have some spring-like weather...............Half my plants are out already, the other half will have to behave themselves in the hot frame or indoors until this next cold front passes.
That is 6 tomatoes, 4 zuchinni, 6 spaghetti squash, and some gourds, all of which are too big for my hot frames now !

How is everyone elses' garden doing ?

Has anyone planted the sweet meats yet ?
I even planted my pole beans 2 days ago...............................

I agree. 20% protein should be safe if not even preferred for a healthy juvenile chicken, and they should not get layer feed until they are near or at point of lay. I often will mix in grower feed when they are going through a molt for their increased protein needs.

I haven't seen a detriment from too high of protein before, but I never have had more the 20% either. I have seen what happens when you feed too low of a protein feed in my friend's flock - delayed point of lay, feather plucking, cannibalism etc. There are also some good pictures of two hens both at the same age from the same genetic line, one of them fed a low protein cracked corn diet who looks immature and unhealthy, and the other who was fed a normal 18-20% diet who looked to be at POL and very healthy. I wish I could find that picture again...
Yes we know about that !
I have never had it happen to me, but friends raising silkies have mentioned it.
