Gee, GO PEEP... I just planted 100 vinca (myrtle, periwinkle, whatever you want to call it) on PURPOSE!

Before you go insane, it is in my "parking strip". It is surrounded on all sides by at least 3 foot of pavement (driveways, sidewalk, road). I was sick of having to mow a useless 20' x 10' area every week or have the city threaten me that my yard was "unkempt"! Vinca stays low, looks good all year, can be trampled, and will fill in fast!


A drop of The Works on a few leaves will kill it back to and including the roots!

Yea it's something where it has to be in a somewhat controlled area or where there's nothing for it to kill like trees- we used it in Cali to hold the hill to my aunts house since it takes over- this gal planted it next to the house where it grew into the siding, probably under house too bout killed the Hydrangea- sadly I had to cut the hydrangea way down to even try to save it, but it managed to take hold in the center of the hydrangea so I don't know if I can even keep it saved

I got mine from Ideal. I'd post pics... But this site hates me and I have yet to be added to the FB WA page. No... I had it at 87-92... and they were dying and grumpy. They would peck each other. They were not trying to get away from the heat, but they just were... fidgety. Since I lowered it they seem happier. They are no longer being mean, chasing imaginary bugs, sprawling all over for naps, drinking less. They are not huddled under the heat, so I don't think they are cold. Nor are they peeping loudly as they did on arrival when they were quite chilled (no packing peanuts means no heat buffer once the heat pack wears out). I agree that it is odd to have a mortality rate for hatchlings. Perhaps it is one of the reasons these guys are not more popular. I mean... they are cute, have great feed to egg ratio (especially if allowed to forage), lay day and for up to 7 years (unlike the 2-4 years you get from production breeds). Granted they are a bit flighty, but that COULD be good for free rangers. They have clean legs and rose combs... so good in most climates. Few have ever heard of these guys, yet the first show was supposedly to prove who had the prettiest Hamburg rooster! It WOULD explain it. Perhaps these guys vary a bit from the norm?

I've never had vinca strangle anything. I'm planning on putting a reblooming lilac in the center next year. It usually makes a GRAET groundcover under bushes. You just need to go out with kitchen shears (my favorite garden tool) and give it a "haircut" in spring and fall!

I'm so not a plant person, so far I've killed 2 cactus, the valentines plant my dad got me, my spider plant which I just love those- my mother is the green thumb and Gardner - with my allergies I don't really care for yard work involving plants lol- it's really easy for me to pass up plants at nurseries, guess it saves on the pocket book tho lol

One lady at Walmart had a cart full and said I guess I better leave or I can keep going, I told her it's easy for me as I'm allergic to everything so I don't care to have it- if I want flowers they have to be fake esp Roses- Tho I really do like Hydrangeas, mine now won't bloom until next year since I had to hack it

I always tease my mother with her Roses...she loves her roses- I always tell her that "she's trying to kill me with roses"...lmao --- No one can figure out how I killed the cactus plants.... even i don't know really, but I did.

I look at some beautiful flowering vines and think how lovely they would be, but then I remember the bindweed in my yard and how I could probably string a bridge of it together to cross the pacific... Staying far away from vines thank you!

Have you tried a rubber tree? I've dropped it, broken half the roots in replanting, over fertilized it till the leaves turned yellow, it's currently infested with some sort of unidentified mite, and hacked it back several times... It's still thriving! Just a thought

I have Clamatis by our front door, beautiful plant...luckily it's surrounded by cement and it's attached to a trellis - but would look lovely growing over a chain link fence tho.
