here on BYC we fondly call that an 'Enabler' and in most all cases we scurry to find what they asked for, who we know that has that or what we think they need and compile all that info & come back to show it to the person...in most cases having proof of someone who has what they want close by....or we help them by picking up/dropping off...birds/eggs/lambs/calves/kids (goaties...)LOL
We enable....LOL
Grrrr, trying to get my girls drinking from horizontal nipples. I have a chicken cup system that they like, and about a month ago added a horizontal nipple bucket in hopes that they would start using it so I can toss a birdbath heater in there come winter and not have to manage frozen water through the winter. They've gotten used to it, I started putting bits of cracked corn and BOSS on the little ledges to get them to peck, but they are just not interested. Any word on ways I can try to make this work, or should I give up and gift the bucket and nipples to someone who may be able to use them?
The corn is pretty much the greatest thing they've ever had (they come running from across the yard when I go into the run to shake the container that I keep corn in for them) and they will peck at and eat the corn from the nipples, but don't seem interested in using the waterer. At some point yesterday the bucket feeding their cup system ran dry and I tried to encourage them to use the nipples again with no success. Since I had to leave for work, I ended up putting some water in the cup-bucket and left, because I don't want them dealing with heat in the 80s with no water source.Maybe try another food. I've had success in training my birds to come to me with cheese, I'm pretty sure they'd do loop de loops for cheese if I tried.
I've tried putting corn on them. Maybe I can smear some oatmeal on the nipples themselves. You just need to find one chicken that starts drinking and the rest will copy. My rooster is usually pretty good about showing the girls all the cool new stuff I brought for them. He even taught them how to eat plums! One of my pullets last year taught her friends how to jump up and eat huckleberries off the bush!
My birds also love any kind of bread. Can you stick some bread or corn on the nipples to encourage them to peck at them?
My girls took to the nipple waterer almost immediately. We made sure to make a big show of tapping them and making the water come out, and made sure there was a drop of water hanging from each. We took away the other water the same day. Within a few hours the head hen went to the waterer and went at it, and the rest soon followed suit. I don't know If it makes a difference, but our nipples (heh) are bright red.I've tried putting corn on them. Maybe I can smear some oatmeal on the nipples themselves.
