Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

great idea ! It is nice that you are helping them !
Sometimes it's hard to suggest to people that they may want to do something else to improve their animal/bird's health & hopefully they do not get offended.
My neighbors here have never raised pigs, and they have their chickens standing in mud worse than the photos you posted !
They only go see their animals when they want eggs, never clean the runs, coop or pig sty....they also are very offended if anyone suggests they improve any of it, as if they know it all.
I would not be surprised if they get sick from eating their pigs...EWwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww!!

Chickielady, I was installing a gutter and downspout on backside of my shed (don't know why this wasn't originally done) which will then divert water into a perforated pipe that will run away from my coop area. Perf pipe will also take some surface water as I've covered it with the abundance of rock my yard provides...Thankfully it was mostly dry today.

My idea for my friends is to show them what I've done and offer to help do something similar at their place. I know I'm risking busybodyness but I hate to see their chickens standing in mud or water. Maybe they will "let me help"

New to BYC! I'm Catt and have a mixed flock of Rhode Island Reds, Barred Rock, and Gold Laced Wyandotte with a total of 7. Since we are all in the same area do I have to do many of the same winterization (sp?) techniques for the coop as other states? It hardly snows here and I could easily bring them inside the mud room if needed for a night or two of snowy weather. If so please feel free to link me to the correct thread!

What types of chickens do you enjoy owning?

Welcome to BYC! I don't plan on doing much winterizing for my coop. It's pretty toasty inside. I have a mixed flock of 12 and I just incubated and hatched my first chicks. It was awesome!

WOW! That sounds tough! I would like to incubate but I don't think my schedule would support it. I started from "day-old" chicks with the RIR in spring and then with the BR and the GLW this fall. This is my first year owning chickens so I'm pretty happy with the results so far. What is in your flock?

Hi and welcome to BYC! I don't plan on winterizing my coop. I think chickens are pretty hardy.

My favorites are RIR (I think mine is a production red tho), Black Australorpe, Barred Rock. These 3 have been such consistent layers and still give me eggs daily while the others have gone on winter break. My newest chickens are Silkies... and I'm still learning about them but love their friendly and puppy-like dispositions.

I have 2 buff orps, 2 silver laced wyandottes, 2 gold sexlinks, 1 RIR, 1 blue andalusian, 1 welsummer, 1 cream legbar mix hen, 1 cuckoo maran, and then a cream legbar mix roo. I plan on offering incubation services too if you have your own roo or if you want potential olive eggers in the spring let me know. I ordered my flock in April this year from a feed store in Rathdrum, ID. I also got my 2 CL mixes off craigslist.

Welcome- it doesn't snow too often in some parts of WA, but does in others. Our weather challenge is more on the lines of lots of rain. I have Australorp, Welsummer, Wyandotte, and Easter Egger hens.
